"We feel sad about it, but we can't help it," said Poornima Harish, managing trustee of Krupa.
"We have no funding from the government and are totally dependant on individual contributions, which are not coming now. Even before the recession, there weren't enough contributors," she added.
The helpline is open now only between 8 am and 10 pm, much to the distress of Krupa staff and many people.
In fact, some people wanted to burn down the helpline office last year since a cow couldn't be rescued at 2 am.
Krupa claims its costs Rs 5,555 a day to run the helpline. The service provides an ambulance and doctors who are on standby all the time. Once healed, the animals are put up for adoption.
Last year, Krupa staff attended 4,000 calls and rescued around 30 different species of animal that included tortoises, deer, camels, squirrels and even bats.
