Court asks MCD to relocate pig shelters

Perhaps the illegal shanties in the city were not enough trouble for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, as the Delhi High Court directed the civic body on Wednesday to relocate pig shelters from residential areas in east Delhi. Taking cognisance of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by an NGO, the court on issued directions to the MCD and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to take necessary steps to relocate the shelters.

A division bench comprising chief justice AP Shah and justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw asked the MCD and DDA officials to plan relocation of the pig shelters from the residential localities within two weeks. The pig shelters are being privately run leading to unhygienic environment and several other problems.

The appeal was filed by a registered NGO Uttar Pradesh Bihar Naagrik Parishad. Itu00a0 alleged that the area has become dirty and unhygienic due to the poor condition of the shelters. It also alleged that the unhygienic conditions at the shelters may cause spread of various diseases and responsible for some prevailing health conditions.

MCD's counsel OP Saxena told the court that some residents of the area have due permission from the civic body to run the shelters.

He also informed the court that the shelters are there from last the last three decades and the MCD officials have been visiting the area to assess pig population. The petition also alleged that the shelter owners are not taking necessary steps to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the area.
