Even after four months of its inception, not a single extremist has stepped forward to avail of it

In order to deal with the growing Naxal menace in Karnataka, the state government has come out with a rehabilitation plan to woo Naxals with a stipend and loan facilities in an effort to bring them back to the mainstream.

Ironically, four months after the scheme was launched, no Naxals have turned up to avail the facility.

"In some parts of Malnad districts of Karnataka activities of left wing extremists have been noticed," said Direct General and Inspector General of Police, Ajai Kumar Singh.

Persons who surrender are eligible for a vocational training with a stipend of Rs 2,000 per month for one year and a grant-cum-loan up to Rs 2 lakh.

"Enthusiastic youth are misguided to join the path of extremism.

We appeal to all those who are indulging in violent and illegal activities in the name of Naxal movement, to join the main stream by taking advantage of the surrender policy," said Kumar.

The offing

Persons who surrender will be eligible for a vocational training with a stipend of Rs 2,000 per month for one year. A grant-cum-loan up to Rs 2 lakh will be available to the person who surrenders.

The rewards will be given for surrendering weapons, explosives and communication equipment starting from Rs 500 to Rs 25,000.u00a0

Additional incentives will be given for providing information leading to capture of other extremists. The withdrawal of cases against the person who surrender will be considered sympathetically.

The surrender is applicable only to persons belonging to Karnataka. This will be available up to May 2011.
