Deja Vu's green and white logo, and the clean, uncluttered ambience bear an uncanny resemblance to the American coffee chain, Starbucks. Is that why they call the cafe, deja vu?

A quick look at the menu revealed thin crust pizza and a variety of breakfast options, from English and American to good old desi parathas.

Yummy, until we were told that they weren't serving pizzas for another 15 days. What is it with restaurants including items on their menu when they're not ready to offer them yet?

We settled on an American Breakfast (Rs 140), Veg Pasta in White Sauce (Rs 125), Mango Smoothie (Rs 75) and Chilli Cheese Toast (Rs 55).

All good so far, until the music system started playing tunes from the late 80s and 90s and not the good ones.

A note to the management: Richard Marx's Hazard is not what hungry foodies are looking for to accompany dinner on a Monday after work.

On second thought, maybe it was a strategy to counter the noise of the traffic on the busy Veer Savarkar Road outside.

Fifteen minutes later we were served, starting with the smoothie. A little too milky, and could have done with more mango, but refreshing nevertheless.

The American breakfast came with a glass of orange juice, fried eggs, chicken sausages and potato wedges.

With the exception of the wedges, which were a little too garlic-y for our taste, everything else on the plate was a definite winner.

Fresh, hot, and accompanied with buttered toast, we couldn't get enough of the well-cooked sausages and the nicely done egg.

The staff was attentive and helpful, and obligingly brought along whatever seasoning we demanded Tabasco sauce, oregano, chilli flakes and pepper.

The pasta wasn't the best we'd tasted, but it made do.

A little less penne, and a bit more cheese and veggies will help. A word about the portions: they're in tandem with the affordable prices, so order one dish per person if you feel like eating a full meal.

The best of the lot the Chilli Cheese Toast was spicy, crunchy and oh-so-cheesy; a perfect sibling to your pasta.

For dessert, we opted for Pineapple Cake (Rs 75) and Chocolate Mousse (Rs 50).

Again, not the worse we've had, but certainly not the best either. The mousse was too hard and too sweet, and the pineapple didn't rock our world. Very average.

There's an extensive range of drinks too, from coffee and tea to chocolate beverages, though we didn't try any.

At: Amar Kunj, Veer Savarkar Marg, Cadell Road, opposite Shivaji Park, Dadar (W).
Deja Vu Cafe didn't know we were there. THE GUIDE reviews anonymously and pays for meals.
