Onion prices make households cry

On Thursday, Bangalore received a fresh load of onions with the highest quality up for sale at a price of Rs 2,500 per quintal.

In a good month, onions would cost anywhere between Rs 20 to Rs 25 per kilo. This month however, it'll cost the average household nearly Rs 45 per kilo.

Professor Raje Gowda from the Agriculture University said, "Onion fields lost out on rain in October and then they were suddenly bombarded with heavy downpours.

The crops couldn't endure it beyond 24 hours and died. Areas that produce onions will be hit badly this year."

An Agriculture Produce Market Committee official, however, said the prices may stabilise in the coming days. "They have stabilised now. Another few days and everything should be fine."
