Eid celebrations turned tragic for the Sheikh family yesterday after they lost their son Subhan (7) to a palm tree collapse. The family was celebrating the festival at Empress Botanical Garden in Camp.Palm tree

The Sheikhs reside in Kondhwa and Subhan’s father, Ebrahim, is a rickshaw driver. Around 4 pm yesterday, the family was at the entrance of the garden when strong winds caused the tree to collapse, crushing the little boy to death.

Prashant Chavan, manager of Empress Garden, said, “It was a 60-year-old Royal Palm tree. Though it was well maintained, it couldn’t withstand the strong winds and suddenly collapsed, trapping the young boy underneath.”

He added, “We immediately called for an ambulance and rushed him to the nearby hospital. But the impact was so severe that he had died on the spot.”
