The father of the student has alleged that several city colleges have provided admissions to students with marks below the cut-off percentage, flouting the regulations set
Deepak Bafna, a parent of a Std XI student, has moved Bombay High Court, alleging that several reputed junior colleges in the city provided illegal admissions to students in the last academic year.
He has also targeted the deputy directorate of education (Pune), the controlling authority of Std XI centralised admission process (CAP), for not acting on the complaints filed by him earlier.
Through an RTI query, Bafna has procured data of six colleges from the Commerce stream to substantiate his claims that all these colleges had not followed the cut off marks procedure.
“I filed the public interest litigation (PIL) in Bombay High Court on Tuesday. Despite several complaints earlier, the deputy directorate office has not taken any action against the colleges, who have not only flouted the norms but also provided illegal admissions. Hence, I decided to take legal help.”
Bafna’s son scored 71.27 per cent marks in the SSC examinations last year. During the Std XI CAP, Bafna observed that many students securing below 70 per cent managed to get admissions in the colleges, while his son was denied admission.
He is of the opinion that the colleges give admissions to many students who get below the cut-off percentages, following which many deserving students, like his son, do not get admissions in these colleges. “I am not fighting this battle for my son. These irregularities should be exposed by someone,” he said.
Education Dept speaks
When contacted, Assistant Director of Education, Balasaheb Owhal, said, “In the past, we had conducted hearings on Bafna’s complaint by calling the principals of several colleges. But nothing concrete had come out of it.”
“One has to understand that besides the legitimate social reservation, we also asked colleges to follow the special reservation policy set by the government.
In the special reservation, students excelling in sports or cultural events get some relaxation in marks. The illegal admissions mentioned by Bafna have been done through these quotas,” Owhal added. Owhal added that his office has not received any notice regarding the PIL from the HC yet.
