Protesters target houses of PM, Sonia, 5-year-old stable

Angry protesters staged a second day of demonstrations to voice outrage over the brutal rape of a five-year-old girl ufffd storming barricades outside the residences of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi yesterday.

The girl, whose private parts suffered horrific injuries due to the savagery of the act, was in stable condition, said doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). They added that she may not undergo any reconstructive surgery for now.

The alleged rapist, Manoj Kumar (22), who was sent in 14 days’ judicial custody yesterday, claimed that a second person was involved in the crime that was committed in East Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar. But the police denied it.u00a0

Anger spilled over as demonstrators squatted on the streets, shouted slogans and scuffled with policemen over the rising incidence of rapes in the national capital.u00a0

Two more rape incidents were reported — of an 11-year-old and of a 15-year-old girl.u00a0
