Ragging case: Sixth accused held

A day after MiD DAY reported how 19-year-old Harish Chowdhary from Rajiv Gandhi Medical College, Kalwa was ragged by his seniors in a hostel room even as the boy pleaded them to leave him, the Kalwa police arrested 25-year-old Sharad Patil, the sixth accused in the case.

Patil, who was absconding on Friday night, was arrested by the cops at Kalwa and produced in court on Saturday. He has been given magistrate custody. Senior Police Inspector, Prakash Nilewad said, “We nabbed him when he came back to the college. He is not a seasoned criminal and didn’t make any attempt to escape.”

The five other accused were arrested and released on bail. Dr C Maitra, the college’s dean, said that the six boys have been suspended and are likely to miss a term. Meanwhile, the victim’s parents arrived in the city from Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. The boy is reportedly depressed after the incident.

His father Harikishore Chowdhary, an ex- MLA of Samajwadi Party from Ambedkar Nagar, said that the college dean has assured him that strict action will be taken against the boys who tortured his son physically and mentally.

“My son called me up on the night of September 26 and narrated to me everything that had happened. I asked him to report the incident to the college dean. We immediately set out to meet our son as we were worried about his safety,” he added. The victim’s parents are planning to take him back home for a few days to help him recover from the entire incident.
