Rahul Raj Singh, accused of abetting the suicide of actress Pratyusha Banerjee, has been booked for alleged drunk driving, police said on Monday.

Rahul Raj Singh was accompanied by a friend, Saloni Singh, when his car was stopped by the traffic police at Gajdharband in suburban Santacruz last night. He was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and also did not carry his driving license, they said. He was brought to Santacruz police station and action was taken for drunken driving and not possessing the driving license, police said.

He allegedly refused to cooperate with the traffic police, behaved rudely with them and tried to wriggle out of the sticky situation by throwing his weight around.

The traffic police were conducting a drive against drunk driving around 1 km from the Santacruz police station last night. Between 11.30 pm and midnight, they pulled over a white Scorpio heading for Santacruz on the Juhu Tara Road, and found Singh behind the wheel. When asked for his driver's licence, the actor said he did not have it on him. The police personnel also smelled alcohol on his breath.

Refused to cooperate

"He was with a woman friend. He refused to cooperate with the police for the procedure that is followed in cases of drunk driving and driving without a license. He was rude to the traffic police personnel and was, therefore, taken to the Santacruz police station for further action," said a police official. When officials at the police station told him DUI is an offence, he allegedly retorted that he was from the film industry, hinting that he could be let off the hook.

Told to appear in court today

Mamraj Chavan, assistant sub inspector (traffic), said the police fined Singh R2,500 for DUI and driving without a licence. "We asked him to appear in the Bandra court on Monday. If he fails to appear before the court, a summons will be sent to him."

PoliceSpeak
Police spokesperson and DCP Ashok Dudhe confirmed that Singh was taken to the police station for driving under the influence of alcohol. "He was accompanied by one Saloni Vijay Sharma, who kept telling the police that if they took action [against him], she would complain to the superiors," he said. A police inspector at the Santacruz station reportedly tried to get Singh and Sharma to calm down. "But they continued to argue," said Dudhe.
