Sending a strong message to anti-social elements in the city, sleuths of the Central Crime Branch eliminated Akram (30), in an encounter, while he was planning to attack a police informer who had escaped a bid on his life earlier.

Akram had around 30 criminal cases pending against, including murder, attempt to murder, rioting, use of illicit firearms, theft of sandalwood trees and vehicle theft.

Recently, he shot and injured police informer Dhanraj for tipping off the police about his activities. A few days later Akram shot dead Nanjundappa, another police informer in broad daylight, to avenge the arrest of his brother.

Taking serious note on the frequent attacks by the criminal, the then Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari promised that the cops would give a fitting reply within 36 hours. A special team had been formed to track down the notorious criminal, but he managed to give them the slip.

While on his trail, Assistant Commissioner of Police B N Nyamegowda received a tip-off stating that Akram was back in the city and was seen in Nandini Layout, where Dhanraj lived.

A police team led by Nyamegowda team swung into action and patrolled the area. Finally near Jalahalli cross, they spotted a car with two people inside. Nyamegowda and Police Inspector M N Nagaraj, who was in uniform, signaled the driver to pull over, but the duo sped away towards the national highway.

After a chase, the team managed to block the vehicle, but Akram alighted from the driver's seat opened fire on the team. A bullet got lodged in Nyamegowda's bulletproof vest and despite several warnings and advice to surrender, he fired again at the cops.

Left with no choice, Nagaraj fired one round resulting in the criminal falling to the ground. He was rushed to the hospital, but was declared brought dead.

In the melee, Akram's accomplice managed to escape Joint Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar said, "He was a proclaimed offender and wanted by both city and state police."

Police Commissioner Jyothi Prakash Mirji appreciated the good work done by the team and reiterated that anti-social activities will not be tolerated.
