Seven pilgrims were killed and 12 injured on Thursday in a stampede that took place while they were trying to board a boat to go to the annual Ganga Sagar mela in West Bengal's south 24 Parganas district, police said.

The mishap occurred when a large number of pilgrims tried to board a vessel at jetty number three.

"They pushed each other, trying to board the vessel ahead of others. That caused the accident," police said.

"They broke the barricade and tried to go ahead. We had asked them not to board any vessel then, as the water level was low," police added.
