He discussed strengthening of the organisation, and attempts of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre "to lower the importance of Mumbai as an international financial centre", NCP spokesperson said.

Pawar asked the leaders to take up issues of public interest and take to the streets.

He expressed concern over the Centre's attempt to lower Mumbai's financial importance at the expense of Gandhinagar (capital of neighbouring Gujarat), NCP spokesman Nawab Malik said.

Meanwhile, state Congress president Manikrao Thakre also said today that Mumbai was known internationally because it was the financial nerve centre of the country.

"UPA government proposed to set up an international financial centre in the city. However, newsreports now say that this centre will come up in Gujarat," he said.
