Spice N Ice: Not so nice

Spice N Ice, the desi fast food joint in Andheri, churns out passable fare at minimal prices. But it shuts the kitchen way too early by Mumbai standards

It seems impossible to reach anywhere in Andheri before 8 pm. With a restaurant that insists on taking its last orders at 8.30 pm we had no choice but to attempt the Herculean task.

Despite planning the entire day around the restaurant's timings and leaving Parel nearly two hours earlier, at 8.30 pm we were still nowhere near our destination. Eventually, we had no choice but to order a take out.

All Topping Pizza

Although we had placed the order much before closing time, a nagging skepticism about the food arriving home remained.

It was a designated Ganpati Visarjan day and the usually packed suburban traffic was at a standstill. We reconciled to the fact that if the food did arrive it would be nothing short of a miracle.

Well, miracles do happen. Nearly half an hour later, albeit a little worse for wear and cold, the food was at the doorstep.

The grinding commute had zapped all energy so a refreshing milkshake before the meal seemed suitable. We started with Chikoo Milkshake (Rs 35) and Pineapple Milkshake (Rs 40).

The Chikoo Milkshake made a perfect start with a thick, sweet and grainy texture. The Pineapple Milkshake, though, was bitter and disappointing. Next, it was time for the Veg Cheese Burger (Rs 30).

Cutely cut into four bite-sized pieces, it turned out to be rather average tasting. But then, maybe we aren't used to burgers without meat.

It's a vegetarian joint, so the only way to go all out was to order the All Topping Pizza, which was the most expensive dish we ordered at Rs 70. Italians might cringe at calling it pizza, but this was the true desi cousin of the cheesy pie.

Loaded with tomato sauce, cheese, capsicum and mushrooms, it was comfortingly homey. Pav Bhaji came last, with a fiery red curry coated in a layer of oil. It didn't taste half as good, probably because it wasn't hot and dripping in oil.

As we ended our meal and stretched out watching a gourmet cooking show on TV, we wondered if Spice N Ice deserved a second chance, perhaps on a day when the burgeoning traffic took a break.

The thought of Andheri without traffic is a merry dream. In that case, Spice N Ice might not hear from us soon.
