The AIDS patient, who will be sentenced tomorrow, had said that his last wish was to get his daughter married; the groom is his nephew, Irfan Talikoti, a businessman

Irfan Talikoti is a worried man these days. A Delhi court will pronounce the sentence in cases against his would be father-in-law and uncle Abdul Karim Telgi tomorrow.

Irfan, a Bangalore-based businessman, will be marrying Telgi's daughter Sana an electronics engineer as soon as the court allows Telgi to attend the wedding.

The prime accused in the multi-crore stamp paper scam is suffering from AIDS and doctors say he will not survive for long.

In an application to the Metropolitan Magistrate, Telgi has said, "My life is like a bubble on the water, it will burst any day. My wife is also critically ill.

I have only one daughter and before my death I have to get her married." His wife has an acute kidney ailment.

Speaking to MiD DAY over the phone, Talikoti confirmed that the marriage was fixed a few months ago. "We are all waiting for the opportune time for the wedding.

I don't think Telgi sahib has much time left. His health is deteriorating by the day. We are just hoping that the court allows my uncle to attend the wedding," he said.

The 32-year-old, who stood by his uncle in various court hearings, feels he was duty bound to help his uncle.

"My decision to marry his daughter is both based on humanitarian grounds as well as love for him and his family," Talikoti said.

He also defended Telgi, whom he called a "god-fearing man", saying, "My uncle has never lied. He was made a scapegoat by politicians and bureaucrats.

But even then he never disclosed anybody's name. He was a simple businessman who somehow got involved in this mess," he said.

Telgi has confessed to his involvement in all the charges leveled against him, pleading for a lenient judgement on humanitarian grounds.

Fake stamp paper scam

Abdul Karim Telgi was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment and fined over Rs 100 crore for masterminding a fake stamp paper scam.

The roots of the case date back to 2001 when the CID (Crime) sleuths had recovered fake revenue stamps, fake stamp papers and fake share-transfer tickets worth around Rs 20 lakh among other things from the office of a woman stamp vendor, Daulatba Darbar, in the Delhi Darwaja area of Ahmedabad.

The subsequent investigation led to the arrest of 15 people, including Telgi.
