Think Godard, think Black and White and complex narratives, but think Godard, think Sci-Fi? Yes, we were not that convinced either, till we IMDB'd the film and were positively shocked.u00a0

Originally titled Alphaville, une etrange aventure de Lemmy Caution, the film came to be known more popularly as Alphaville. Produced in 1965, the film deals with the highly mechanized and controlled life of a city called Alphaville, far in the future, on another planet. Godard stuck to his favourite genres and this production is also categorized as a dystopian science fiction cum film noir.

The film stars Eddie Constantine, Anna Karina, Howard Vernon and Akim Tamiroff and was the winner of the Golden Bear award at the 1965 Berlin film festival. The film was shot in real locations in Paris with modernist glass and concrete buildings representing the future city's interiors.

The story revolves around a secret agent Lemmy Caution masquerading as a newsman. He is sent on a mission to bring back a scientist from the old American part of the universe termed Nueva York. He meets the scientist's daughter, Natacha, now an automaton who has lost all human feelings.u00a0 This ultramodern city is called Alphaville ruled in a dictatorial manner by a computer called Alpha 60.

The residents of this place live in perpetual fear. They are all bar-coded drones that must hide their emotions lest they be executed. But, Natacha comes to the rescue of Caution and initiates him into the inner-circle of life in Alphaville. Here, Caution in a way opens the eyes of Natacha to independent thought and freedom.

If that description hasn't helped you decide then we're pretty sure, nothing ever will. The movie, however, is worth a watch and several Godard and French film savants will tell you more than a million reasons why you need to watch this film. We're convinced enough and will be there.
