It's a rarity that the city gets to listen to three rock bands perform live on a weekend (tried-and-tested Bollywood remixes make more commercial sense). Three must-attend gigs this weekend

It's a rarity that the city gets to listen to three rock bands perform live on a weekend (tried-and-tested Bollywood remixes make more commercial sense). Aditi Sharma chats up with members from these bands who will dole out an eclectic playlist ranging from Acoustic Folk Rock to Soft/Classic Rock and Hardcore Metal. For once, audiences are spoilt for choice

Metal Mania with Bhayanak Maut and Reverrse Polarity

A constant grouse that Metal fans have is that there aren't enough venues to host their kind of music. Since Metal is clearly not every man's music, bands find it that much more difficult to get space at regular haunts. But Blue Frog is taking care of this complaint, for this weekend at least. Grungy Metal-heads can troop into the nightclub and head-bang to their favourite growlers. Band members from Bhayanak Maut (BM) and Reverrse Polarity express surprise at the nightclubu00a0 opening its doors to their music. "But we aren't complaining," BM's bassist Vinit is quick to respond. For the gig, BM has a new song up its sleeve that they might unveil. The most exciting news for BM fans, though, is that Vinay (who had declared he's quitting the band earlier this year) is on for the gig. "We've drugged him to ensure he performs for tomorrow's gig. We gave him a high dose of a drug we cannot name (or he'll get an antidote to it) and made him sign a contract that obligates him to play at the gig," says Vinit.
Reverrse Polarity is also super-excited about the new venue. They have made a few changes to the band's setup and are keen to show it off at the gig. "We have two growlers in the band (Gaurav and Viraj) now and Shikhar and I have moved to better guitars, which is taking our music to another level. It's going to be a lot more explosive than ever before," promises Jordan.

Soft/classic rock with Fallen
On: April 4, 7 pm at Vie Lounge & Deck, Juhu Tara Road, Santacruz (W).
Call: 26603003
Band members: Gourov Dasgupta (Lead Guitar), Roshan Balu (Bass), Debjyoti Saha (Drums), Mish2 (Keyboard) Banjo and Barkha (Vocals)

Practically every member of this band takes pride in being part of the Hindi film industry in some way or the other. Gourov has created soundtracks for films, Roshan has worked on Bollywood projects as a programmer and sound engineer, Banjo was a finalist in a music-based reality TV show and Barkha will be making her debut as a B-wood playback singer soon. So it's not surprising that the band is easily convinced to play to the gallery. Vie Lounge, the latest to introduce Live Nights, is known for the romantic setting on the deck area. The band members aim to enhance the setting with their music. Though the band calls itself a Heavy Metal-loving group, they will play mostly covers of songs by Deep Purple, Pink Floyd and even Bon Jovi. "The line up for the evening will be Classic and Soft Rock numbers because that suits the setting of the place. We'll play popular Rock numbers but with a Jazzy and Loungy twist," says Gourov.

Acoustic Folk Rock with Dischordian
On: Today, 5.30 pm at Hanging Garden Bandstand, Malabar Hill.
Call: 981970371
Band members: Garreth D'Mello (Vocals, Guitars), Howard Pereira (Guitars, Backing Vocals), Agnnelo Picardo (Trumpet, Percussions) and Nigel Rajaratnam (Saxophone, Melodica)

This entirely acoustic outfit has been steadily gaining popularity in the city with regular gigs at various nightclubs. But this evening's performance will be a little different as the band performs in an open air space. "I've always wondered why the bandstands in Mumbai are not used to the fullest (except for cooing couples) so it's exciting that we will be making music at a place created for this very purpose," says Garreth. The band believes that outdoor gigs have a 'picnic-like vibe'. "We'll be playing songs keeping the mood and setting in mind. The songs will be more up-tempo, in sync with the fun mood of the evening," says Garreth. Expect a Folk-meets-Rock music performance at this gig. "The band does not use any electronic instruments. Our songs reflect a lot of Folk influences and because I come from a Punk-Rock background, it sneaks into the music too," says Garreth, while talking about Dischordian's signature style. Plus, the band has recently started jamming with saxophone and melodica player Nigel, who will also bring in a new sound to the gig.
