New Delhi: Two cousins were killed when the scooty they were riding was hit by the car of an assistant commissioner in the Finance Ministry, in north Delhi's Timarpur area, police said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred yesterday around 9 am near Timarpur's Sant Nirankari Ground Road when the scooty was hit by a speeding car driven by Rajeev Nayan, they said.

"The cousins, Rahul (19) and Preeti (20), were turning from Gandhi Vihar towards Sant Nirankari Ground Road when Nayan's car coming from Mukherjee Nagar area, hit their scooty," said a senior police officer.

"The duo were not wearing helmets. They were rushed to a nearby hospital by passersby, but were declared brought dead," he added.

Nayan had tried to flee but his car broke down at a few meters from the spot and he was arrested, said the officer.
