Jail authorities say such a move has been initiated because among thousands who visit the jail on Raksha Bandhan, many are unwanted and the jail becomes crowded and unsafe.u00a0

"Nearly 16000-17000 women visitors are recorded every year on rakhi in Tihar. So, our purpose is to regulate the number of visitors," said Sunil Gupta, spokesperson Tihar Jail authorities in Delhi.

Tihar authorities have also banned rakhis and sweets to be carried by visitors from outside as many of the relatives were found carrying tobacco, cash and other banned items for the inmates.

Only those who register their names in advance will be allowed to visit the inmates inside the jail premises. "Those who do not make an advance booking will not be entertained on that day,’’ the official added.

Nearly ten thousand inmates are lodged in Tihar, the biggest jail in Asia.

Among other inmates are many VIPs who are currently lodged in various cells of the Tihar jail. Suresh Kalmadi, A Raja and Kanimozhi among many others were lodged in Tihar till recently and are now out on bail.
