THE Dehu Road police have arrested a man for the murder of his wife. The man suspected his wife of having an affair, said the police.
The police said Baban Dangat, after stabbing his wife Yogita (35) to death, tried to cover up his crime by claiming that unidentified assailants had killed her.
Baban, a resident of Sainagar in Dehu Road, allegedly stabbed committed the crime on Friday night. Yogita was the newly appointed general secretary of the Pimpri-Chinchwad unit of the Congress.
The police lodged a murder case against Baban after Yogita's sister Poonam Tambe (21), a resident of Thane, filed a complaint.
The police said Baban was also injured by the knife he used to kill Yogita.
The police said the couple had fought around midnight on Friday, after which she was stabbed by Baban, who was also injured in the scuffle.
The police said Baban claimed some unidentified assailants had barged into their residence and attempted to kill him, but got his wife instead. Baban informed the Dehu Road police about the death of his wife around 9 am on Saturday, but could not satisfactorily answer why he was late in approaching the police.
"Yogita had left her first husband's home while Baban too had divorced his first wife," said a police source. "They had been staying together as husband and wife for two years."
Police Inspector Nitinkumar Gokave said, "Yogita had started some self-help groups in her area. Some documents and banners were found at the residence stating that Yogita was the newly appointed general secretary of the Pimpri-Chinchwad unit of the Congress. Baban suspected her character, because of which the two often fought." The officer added, "Going by the complaint lodged by Yogita's sister, we have registered an FIR against Baban. He has undergone a surgery at Sassoon hospital, and we are waiting for his statement."
