The show, which will be held at Russel Market between December 24 and 25, is being organised after a gap of eight years
Russell Market is getting a face-lift for the upcoming Christmas celebrations, and the Merchants Association is leaving no stone unturned for the 'Christmas Show', that will be held after a gap of eight years on December 24 and 25. The show was a tradition followed for several decades, right from the days of British.

The show had stopped in 1983 for various reasons. Efforts were made to organise it in 2002, but after that, it was discontinued.

Show must go on
This time, over 200 varieties of dry fruits, and fruits and flowers from China, the US, New Zealand, Italy, Thailand, Japan, South Africa, Korea, Afghanistan, Australia will be on display. Fruit and vegetable merchants at Russell Market have already placed orders for a variety of products throughout the world and are expecting the products to reach the city in couple of day's time.

Mohammed Idris Choudhury, general secretary, Fruits and English Flower Merchants' Association, Russell Market, said, "This show started around the time the market was built in 1927. It was discontinued because people had lost interest in it, but we would like to conduct it every year from now on. The whole market will be decorated and illuminated. Merchants here spent lakhs of rupees in getting the foreign products and they do it for fame but not for money"

Win-win situation
"The best display will get a gold medal. We have decided three prizes in each category (fruits, flowers, vegetables and meat). We will be inviting the Mayor, the BBMP Commissioner and other officials, who will be judging the show," he added.

"The fruit and flower shop owners have ordered for a variety of fruits and flowers for the show, which will be displayed for the show on December 24 and 25," he added. The entry will be free, and the organisers hope that more and more people will come and enjoyu00a0u00a0the show.
