Pilates is a mind/body exercise and body-conditioning method with a uniquely precise and intelligent approach.

The Zone is the only studio in South India offering a pilates programme on the pilates reformer machines, conducted by certified trainers. The reformer machine, being specific only to pilates, provides a challenging workout that is suitable for all ages and abilities.u00a0

How it's done: Pilates is a blend of the tranquility and contemplative nature of Eastern disciplines, such as yoga with the fluid nature and strengthening principles found in various forms of Western exercises. Each 45 minutes pilates session begins with a warm-up, followed by a series of systematic and precise movements on the machine. These movements require concentration and focus to isolate specific muscles, thereby engaging both mind and body.

What it does: Pilates works to strengthen the weaker muscles too. The result is a properly balanced body, with better joint mobility, a firm musculature and good, natural posture. Pilates helps those who want a stronger back or flatter stomach to those with specific injuries or medical problems.u00a0

Ruchi Khaitan, one of the ladies who works out at The Zone, says, "It's wonderful to wake up without a back-ache. Pilates keeps me in shape." Another lady who swears by pilates, says, "It has brought me back to performing on stage after a long break of three and a half years. It helped a 42-year-old body that felt 48 now look 35."

Art of balance

Fitness First has started a group exercise (aerobic) programme called Les Mills. Started by a New Zealand Olympian, Les Mill, these classes include the formats of Bodypump, Bodybalance and RPM. (A revolutionary form of indoor cycling.)

How it works: Bodybalance combines moves and stances from a range of disciplines like yoga, pilates and tai chi into an hour-long energetic routine. Bodypump is a revolutionary and original bar-bell weight training workout that strengthens tones and defines every muscle in your body. RPM is an indoor cycling programme for developing cardiovascular capacity, burning up to 800 calories in one 45-minute session a favorite of those wanting to reduce quick body fat. Other group classes held here are Hip-hop dance classes, Step (choreographed workout on a platform in which the effort is of walking 3 miles / hour with a calorie burn of running 7 miles/hour), kickboxing karate, muay thai, tai chi, and taekwondo.

What it does: Designed to keep you energized, these classes have activities like cycling, dance, weightlifting and yoga, helping you get fit, with elements of fun too. The classes are designed in such a way that it helps break the monotony of a regular workout.
