India has recorded at least 236 cases of the Omicron variant of Coronavirus across 16 states and UTs so far of which 104 people have recovered or migrated, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.

As it reviewed the Covid situation across the country, the Centre on Centre on Thursday asked state and Union Territories to consider imposing local restrictions ahead of the festive season. States have been told to be more vigilant and monitor case positivity, doubling rate, and clusters of new cases.

Maharashtra has recorded the maximum 65 cases of the Omicron variant followed by Delhi at 64, Telangana 24, Karnataka 19, Rajasthan 21 and Kerala 15, health ministry data showed. However, reports said Tamil Nadu and Karnataka saw 33 and 12 new cases respectively.

Before the addition of new cases, Tamil Nadu’s Omicron count was 1. Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ma Subramanian, said the infected included the contacts of the state’s first case, an air traveller who arrived here from Nigeria via Doha.
