India adds 39,361 new Covid-19 cases and 416 fatalities in a span of 24 hours, according to the Union health ministry’s data updated Monday morning

India’s active Covid-19 cases increased by 2,977 to 4,11,189 in a span of 24 hours, according to the government’s data updated on Monday morning.
The Union health ministry added 39,361 new cases and 416 fatalities. The daily test positivity rate (TPR) rose past 3 per cent after 35 days.

The daily positivity rate has increased to 3.41 per cent and the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 2.31 per cent, according to the ministry. The national Covid-19 recovery rate was recorded at 97.35 per cent.
Bharat Biotech lagging
The Centre had, on June 26, told the Supreme Court that efforts were on to vaccinate India’s entire adult population against by December 31 of this year. The country would need 186 to 188 crore doses to inoculate 93-94 crore people aged 18 years and above, said the Centre. It added that 51.6 crore of those doses will be made available by July 31.
However, as of the government data available on June 26, only 43.51 crore people have been vaccinated so far. Moreover, approximately only about 10 crore of them have received both the shots.
According to a Reuters report, citing an analysis of government data on Monday, Bharat Biotech has not been able to increase its production of the Covaxin anti-Coronavirus shot. The country could meet the July-end target of administering 51.6 crore doses by tripling the daily vaccinations to 1.4 crore. However, Bharat Biotech would not be able to meet the government’s expectation of receiving 6 crore to 7 crore Covaxin doses monthly from July or August.
The company said it would be able to deliver 2.5 crore doses in July and 3.5 crore doses in August, Reuters cited Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya’s statement in Parliament last week.
Gambhir drug hoarding case: No stay on proceedings
The Supreme Court on Monday refused to stay the proceedings against BJP MP Gautam Gambhir’s foundation in a case relating to illegal procurement and distribution of Covid-19 medicines. A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and M R Shah said people were running around for medicines and drugs, and suddenly a trust comes and says we will give you medicines. “This is not done. We do not want to say anything but we also have our ears to the ground.”
