Pawar said the Opposition had no option but to take an unprecedented step after being consistently denied the opportunity to raise key issues
The NCP-SP chief criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for omitting Jawaharlal Nehru in his Independence Day address from the Red Fort.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday expressed concern over the prolonged disruption of Parliament, alleging that the ruling party was responsible for the deadlock and warning that such a situation posed a serious threat to democracy, reported ANI.
Speaking at a public event in Pune, the veteran leader said, “The picture of the country has changed. The Parliament session has been running for 14 days, but proceedings have been stalled throughout. We go, mark our attendance, and the moment the House begins, chaos erupts and the session is adjourned. This has never happened before. When those in power themselves obstruct Parliament, it weakens democracy.”
Pawar said the Opposition was left with no choice but to adopt an unprecedented course of action after being repeatedly denied the chance to raise important issues. “To change this situation, we all met in Delhi. Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and other leaders were present. We decided that if the ruling party continues to stall Parliament and misuse power, we must take a united stand. For the first time in history, 300 MPs staged a disciplined, peaceful protest. We were detained, but it was all for one purpose, to safeguard democracy and preserve the parliamentary system,” he said, reported ANI.
The NCP-SP chief also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for omitting Jawaharlal Nehru in his Independence Day address from the Red Fort. “Every Prime Minister presents a vision for the nation on this occasion, and he did so. But not mentioning Nehru was disturbing. Nehru devoted his life to the freedom struggle, kept India united after Independence, enhanced our global standing, and introduced the philosophy of Panchsheel to promote peace. Such a leader’s contribution should not be ignored,” Pawar said, as reported by ANI.
As reported by ANI, calling for greater unity among Opposition parties, Pawar emphasised that national interest must come above all else. “The only answer is unity. Protecting the nation’s interests allows for no compromise, and in doing so, the thoughts of Gandhi and Nehru cannot be set aside.”
