Unites sets up legal cell for the jobless and overworked

Using the economic recession as an excuse, some IT firms are cutting down on staff even if it is not necessary.

Not only has this affected those who have lost their jobs, it is also overburdening the ones still employed.

Coming to the rescue of these hapless people, is an organisation called Unites.

"We agree that some of the jobs are bound to go," said Karthik Shekar, general secretary, Unites. "But, some companies are removing people even though it is not called for."

To help the employees, who have been unfairly removed, Unites has commissioned a legal cell in the association and legal luminaries like Shankar Hegde and Mariswamy will lend their services free of cost.

7 cases already

The union has filed seven cases so far. "In some cases we have moved the labour commission, while most of the cases are pending in the civil court," said Shekar. "We expect the cases to increase."

The union is also creating awareness among the employees with workshops and symposiums already.

Before the offer

It will soon start a know-your-rights drive. Apart from educating the employees on labour rights, it will orient them about reading the fine print before taking up a job.

The union can be contacted at 22355959, 41235499 and 9341210784.
