Prime Minister Narendra Modi has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the longest-serving head of an elected government in India. He has completed 8,931 days in office, surpassing former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, who held the record earlier of serving for 8,930 days.

This count includes Modi’s tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat as well as his time as Prime Minister of India, marking his entry into the 25th year in public office.

Journey from Gujarat to Delhi

PM Modi began his leadership journey on October 7, 2001, when he took oath as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He served in that role for over 13 years, until May 2014.

He then moved to national politics and was sworn in as the 14th Prime Minister of India on May 26, 2014. He made history by becoming the first non-Congress leader to win a full majority in the Lok Sabha. Modi also became the first non-Congress Prime Minister to complete two full terms and return for a third consecutive term, after winning the 2014, 2019, and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Record-breaking leadership

Over the years, Modi has set several records in Indian politics. He is the longest-serving Chief Minister of Gujarat and also the Prime Minister with the longest prior experience as a Chief Minister.

He is also notable for being the first Prime Minister born after India’s Independence, symbolising a generational shift in leadership.

Strong online presence

Apart from political achievements, Modi has also built a strong presence on social media.

He recently crossed 30 million subscribers on YouTube, becoming one of the most-followed global leaders on the platform. On Instagram, he has surpassed 100 million followers, making him the first serving world leader to reach this mark while on X (formerly Twitter), he currently has over 106 million followers.

These milestones reflect his ability to connect with people both in India and across the world through digital platforms.

Strengthening global partnerships

Through frequent foreign visits, international summits, and initiatives such as the G20 presidency, Modi has worked to strengthen India’s global standing, with the impact evident in how the country navigates complex situations like ongoing conflicts.

Prime Minister Modi has expanded India’s global ties by strengthening strategic partnerships with the United States, Japan, Australia, and key European nations, while maintaining close relations with Russia. He has also increased engagement with neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and outreach to the Global South, positioning India as an active player.
