Bunty Jahagirdar, one of the accused in the 2012 Pune blasts case, was allegedly shot dead by unidentified attackers on Wednesday afternoon, police officials said, reported the PTI.

The incident took place in Shrirampur town in Ahilyanagar district of Maharashtra, police said.

According to the PTI, Jahagirdar, who was in his mid-50s, was travelling on a two-wheeler with another person when two bike-borne assailants opened fire on him. The attack happened around 2 pm on Borawake College Road as he was returning from a burial ground.

Rushed to hospital, succumbed to injuries

After the shooting, Jahagirdar suffered bullet injuries and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital. However, doctors declared him dead during treatment, as per the PTI.

Ahilyanagar Superintendent of Police Somnath Gharge confirmed the incident and said the exact reason behind the attack is still unknown.
Police Launch Investigation

“The motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained. Multiple teams have been formed to probe the case, and the investigation is on,” Gharge said, the news agency reported.

Police are examining CCTV footage and questioning witnesses to identify the attackers.

Pune serial blasts case

Jahagirdar was arrested by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for his alleged role in the 2012 Jangli Maharaj Road serial blasts in Pune.

On August 1, 2012, four low-intensity bomb blasts occurred at busy locations on Jangli Maharaj Road, including near Balgandharva Theatre, a Dena Bank branch, a McDonald’s outlet and Garware Bridge within a span of nearly 40 minutes. The blasts caused panic but no fatalities.

The explosions occurred at locations within a radius of 1 km in Jangli Maharaj Road. A fifth live bomb was found on JM Road which was later defused. The blasts that shook Pune city left and had left a 34-year-old tailor injured.

Criminal cases registered against Jahagirdar

According to the police, Jahagirdar allegedly had several criminal cases registered against him in Ahilyanagar district of Maharashtra. These cases include serious allegations against him with charges of murder, bodily offences and criminal intimidation.

He had been out of jail after a court granted him bail in 2023 in the Pune blasts case.
