Markets tumble in early trade mirroring global sell-off; Sensex tanks over 700 points


Stock market benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty tumbled in early trade on Thursday mirroring weak trends in global equities amid the US fiscal worries along with debt concerns. The 30-share BSE benchmark gauge Sensex tanked 578.3 points to 81,018.33 in early trade. The NSE Nifty declined 203.45 points to 24,610. Later, the BSE benchmark traded 746.48 points lower at 80,832.82, and the Nifty quoted 233.80 points down at 24,575.65.



Mumbai rains: Hospitals remain unprepared for monsoon despite early rain warnings

Though heavy rain has already lashed the city through April and May and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has been issuing yellow and orange alerts periodically for the city and Konkan region, the city’s civic hospitals seem to be taking it easy with respect to monsoon preparedness. As per climate experts, if the ongoing pattern of rain continues, monsoon could reach Mumbai as early as June 1, almost a fortnight before the normal June 11 onset. mid-day tried to do a ground-check on hospitals’ preparedness for the monsoon. Mumbai chef turns superman, saves police constable at Girgaon Chowpatty

Super chef Tehmtan Dumasia, 62, turned superman for a young police constable who was violently attacked by a drug addict at Girgaon Chowpatty in South Mumbai on the morning of February 6. As soon as he witnessed the police officer, who was sitting on his bike, being struck on the head with a sack containing a paver block, Tehmtan rushed to restrain the assailant, stirring up the courage of other onlookers.
