Santiago Peña Palacios, President of Paraguay, arrived in India on June 2 for a State Visit from June 2 to June 4 at Prime Minister Modi’s invitation. It’s his first official trip to India and only the second by a Paraguayan head of state.
President Peña is joined by a high-level delegation of ministers, senior officials, and business leaders. During the visit, he will also stop in Mumbai before wrapping up on June 4.
During his stay in New Delhi, President Peña is scheduled to hold discussions with Prime Minister Modi on Monday, where the two leaders will review the full spectrum of bilateral relations. Prime Minister Modi is also set to host a luncheon in honour of the visiting dignitary. President Droupadi Murmu is expected to meet President Peña and will host a banquet in his honour. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar are also expected to call on the Paraguayan President.
India and Paraguay established diplomatic relations on September 13, 1961, and have since shared warm and cooperative ties. Over the years, both nations have expanded their collaboration in key sectors such as trade, agriculture, health, pharmaceuticals, and information technology.
Paraguay is an important trade partner for India in Latin America, with Indian companies in sectors like automobiles and pharmaceuticals operating there. Meanwhile, Paraguayan firms, mainly via joint ventures, have built a foothold in India, bolstering bilateral economic ties.
The two nations also share similar perspectives on various global issues, including the need for reforms in the United Nations, action on climate change, promotion of renewable energy, and the fight against terrorism.
During his visit to Mumbai, President Santiago Peña is anticipated to engage in several key interactions. He is expected to meet with state leaders to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and fostering economic cooperation.
Additionally, he will hold meetings with representatives from India’s thriving business community, as well as startups, innovators, and members of the technology sector.
These interactions aim to explore opportunities for collaboration, expand investment avenues, and bolster ties between the two countries in areas of shared interest, including innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship.
