Wanting a specific number on their car plate has led people to go to any length to get it. So much so that often many motorists use the help of illegal touts and agents and pay them exorbitantly to get the job done. Now, in an attempt to get rid of the agents, the transport department has come up with a new method for people to get VIP numbers.

From December, the authorities will be displayed the available numbers at every RTO along with the official fees to pay to acquire that number. Currently, a motorist pays anywhere between Rs 5,000 and Rs 1 lakh to get a VIP number. “The National Informatics Center is developing a system in which all special numbers available will be displayed. Those which are not will get eliminated from the list,” said a RTO official explaining the new system.

Authorities added that the new system would help motorists and also eliminate agents and touts who demand additional money for these numbers. Presently, motorists who want a special number plate often approach agents and pay them extra for theiru00a0services. In fact, MiD DAY had reported on November 1 how a woman had been charged extra for a specific car number plate, but at the end of it, the number on the car differed from her registration certificate and the vehicle (‘Woman paid for special number plate that never arrived’).u00a0

Moreover, motorists complain that often when they want a special number, it is not available, as it has been reserved for a politician or actor or some industrialist, deriving the common man from registering their car with a specific number. An official added that with the new system in place, these practices would come to a stop, as all of it would be controlled by the software and would allow for transparency in the process. “It would not only save money for buyers but also prevent corrupt practices,” added the RTO official.u00a0
