Iran has strongly criticised the United States for using economic sanctions as a way to pressure independent countries such as Iran and India, accusing Washington of trying to block their growth and development, the IANS reported on Thursday.

In a post on social media platform X, the Embassy of Iran in India stated, “The United States continues to weaponise the economy and use sanctions to force its will on independent nations such as Iran and India. These unfair and harmful actions go against international law and violate national sovereignty. This is nothing less than a modern form of economic imperialism.”

Iran also said that standing up to such US policies is part of a larger movement to build a non-Western, multilateral world order and to strengthen the Global South.

The statement came shortly after US President Donald Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, along with a penalty on India for purchasing Russian oil, starting 1 August.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned fresh US sanctions on Iran’s oil trade, calling them a “malicious act” aimed at hurting the country’s economy and harming the well-being of its people.

Speaking to the media in Tehran, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqaei strongly criticised the new US sanctions targeting Iranian individuals, companies, and ships linked to Iran’s oil and energy industries.

“These sanctions show the clear hostility of American leaders towards the Iranian people,” Baqaei said. He described the US approach as unilateral, illegal, and a serious threat to international law and human rights.

“The US continues to ignore global rules, human rights, and respect for national sovereignty,” he added. “These acts put the world at risk and can be seen as crimes against humanity.”

Iran has long accused the US of unfairly targeting it through sanctions, especially in key sectors like oil and finance, which play a major role in the country's economy.
