With the winter season gripping major parts of the country, Kashmir on Monday experienced intense cold waves. As reported by the news agency PTI, parts of the state recorded temperatures as the minimum. With a significant drop in temperature, the mercury in Kashmir has been recorded below the freezing point.

Srinagar on Sunday, as per the officials, experienced the coldest night of this winter, as reported by news agency PTI.

The local meteorological office, while informing about the extremely cold conditions in Jammu and Kashmir, said, “The minimum temperature of Srinagar recorded a low of minus 3.2 degrees Celsius, the coldest night of this winter season so far.”

The weather officials, while asserting more about the cold weather conditions across the valley, said that “Shopian in south Kashmir was the coldest in the valley at minus 5.1 degrees Celsius, followed closely by Pulwama, where the minimum temperature stayed five degrees below the freezing point,” as cited by news agency PTI.

Apart from the major cities, the Pahalgam tourist resort in the Anantnag district recorded a low of minus 4 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.9 degrees Celsius.

While the Zojila Pass connecting the Valley with Ladakh recorded a low of minus 16 degrees Celsius, the conditions across the northern part of Kashmir experienced sheer cold.

Furthermore, the Kashmir Valley has been going through a prolonged dry spell since October, and the Met office has forecast dry weather to continue over the next week, as reported by news agency PTI.

Earlier in November, Srinagar recorded its first sub-zero temperature of the season at minus 0.1 degrees Celsius, marking the onset of winter in Kashmir.

While Gulmarg and Pahalgam have already been witnessing freezing temperatures, the MeT department predicts dry weather and further temperature drops in the coming few days.

Due to the morning and evening chilly winds blowing across the valley from snow-clad mountain tops, the weather in Kashmir has now turned quite cold.

Amid the freezing temperatures in the state, locals have now started covering themselves with heavy woollens.

While the weather conditions across Kashmir are concerning, experts have cautioned people, especially elders and children, not to expose themselves to extreme cold.
