#TheDress is a worldwide phenomenon

A simple lace dress has been trending on social networking sites across the world with people trying hard to decipher the colour of the dress, making #TheDress a worldwide phenomenon.

The colour of a dress has sparked a huge debate online with even Hollywood celebrities from Taylor Swift to Juliane Moore commenting on it.

The funny phenomenon was started by a tumblr user named bellasfault. She posted the image of the dress and asked others' opinion about its colour saying, "Guys please help me -- is this dress white and gold, or blue and black? Me and my friends can't agree and we are freaking out."

Soon it snowballed into a big debate with half the online community saying it was white and gold and the other half disagreeing to it as they thought it was black and blue.

The internet is divided into two groups now- team white and gold and team black and blue.

"Not since Monica Lewinsky was a White House intern has one blue dress been the source of so much consternation," is how Wired magazine summed up the issue. The science magazine declared the lace bandage dress as blue in an article titled "The Science of Why No One Agrees on the Colour of This Dress",

Celebrities too joined the debate giving their own punchlines to the twisted story.

Jimmy Fallon: "@questlove it's clearly #goldandwhite #TheDress."

Justin Bieber: "And for everyone asking I see blue and black."

Demi Lovato: "Hold on.... So people actually see white and gold....??"

Mindy Kaling: "It's a blue and black dress! Are you kidding me."

Oscar best actress winner Julianne Moore said in her reply to Kaling, "What's the matter with you guys, it's white and gold."

Taylor Swift: "I don't understand this odd dress debate and I feel like it's a trick somehow. I'm confused and scared. PS: It's obviously blue and black."

Jaden Smith: "I'm seeing blue and black, as of now."

Ellen DeGeneres: "From this day on, the world will be divided into two people. Blue & black, or white & gold."

James Franco had a new addition to the colour palette: Dress controversy... violet and black! Obviously."

Kal Penn tried to stay positive by saying, "The dress is half full."

Miley Cyrus posted a photo of her version of the dress in rainbow colours on Instagram.
