More than 99 per cent of the people in my locality, which comprises the educated middle class, did not switch off their lights. However, Lokmanya Tilak Nagar, a nearby slum, observed Earth Hour. Though illiterate, the slum dwellers behaved in a more responsible manner than the learned lot.
Why couldn't Mumbai stay without power for an hour? How do we then fight the hazardous effects of global warming?
Hence, there should be load shedding twice a week across the city. Mumbaikars should be forced to save power if they don't cooperate in voluntary initiatives.u00a0u00a0
People across the globe observed Earth hour on Saturday. But not many in Mumbai switched off their lights. Citizens need to understand the importance of conserving energy.
Observing Earth Hour once in a year won't help. We need to do this on a weekly basis. The city should choose one day in a week, where all electrical appliances will be switched off.
