In this voting system, candidates bagging 50 per cent votes will be winners, says Anil S Gudekar
What one needs to ask is why are we blaming them? Is it because they contested according to our constitution?
Need change
If we think this is not fair then we should change the constitution introduce preferential voting system in which voters have the option to select a group of candidates in order of preference by ranking them as 1,2,3,4,5 etc. The candidate who gets 50 per cent votes should be declared winner.
Still elected!
In this ballot system, the winner is the choice of majority of the voters.
According to our constitution, candidates who get the maximum number of votes are declared winners even if the winning margin is 20 to 25 per cent. Which means, in spite of failing to get majority percentage, a candidate is still elected.
Can we call this democracy? So let's stop the blame game and demand for a preferential voting system for India.
