If you needed any more evidence about the dangers of driving under the influence, simply put your minds in reverse gear (since this is about cars) to the incident of the flying car on the Mumbai Coastal Road. Just a couple of days ago, a driver crashed into the railing at night, and his car plunged into the sea. He was rescued by jawans stationed nearby who risked their lives and jumped into the sea to save him. He was allegedly drunk and driving recklessly.

A huge tragedy has been averted. Other vehicles could have been hit because of his driving. He himself could have drowned; his rescue has been nothing short of miraculous, and even cops/or those on that stretch for some work could have perished because of this.

That is why we say more power to anti-drunk driving rules. The latter especially clouds judgment, gives one a false sense of control and then, of course, because sense is compromised, one ends up speeding and hurtling toward near death. One cannot even begin to imagine the carnage if this had happened on the Coastal Road and water, and had happened on a bridge. Imagine a car dashing into the rail on a bridge and plunging into other cars below.

One needs to reinforce the don’t-drink-and-drive message. One needs to drive home the speed kills message. From traffic cops to the first rung of the ladder — families and parents at home must ingrain that lesson into their kids. Whether they will grow up and drive is immaterial; this is about talking about these dangers repeatedly, so it becomes a part of the DNA. It may also stop youngsters from caving in to peer pressure. They can also dissuade their misguided friends from drinking and driving or speeding. The messages are old, but there is wisdom in constant reminders and red flags.
