A trekking company is planning a new series of hikes starting next month that have one clear criterion — no phones.

An organiser stated that even when people are out amidst nature, they are looking at it through their phone camera. He added that this poses different challenges for organisers. For instance, they have to go out of their way to get people truly involved in their hike. He added that any trip is a sensory experience. Recently, they have witnessed a growing community of people who travel specifically to create content. So, even when people show up for treks, they are not as attuned.

This goes back to our obsession with getting the picture rather than enjoying the moment. While it may seem unrealistic to do a permanent digital detox, now that we straddle two worlds — the offline and the online we need to understand that balance is important.

There are times when we can get the picture we want to post on social media. Yet, keep that to a specific time or after a particular event. Savour the moment ‘offline’. We are so busy with that awesome click or thinking about the ‘likes’ something will garner that we forget really to enjoy the moment offline and are simply focused on training the lens for that picture.

Even during an address, event, or lecture, so many in the audience are not hearing the speech or words of wisdom from the chief guest. Instead, they are busy trying to get a photo of the celebrity speaker, letting the words wash over them.

We have documented numerous times how an obsession with selfies and pictures can prove dangerous during activities such as hikes. One is not looking everywhere, and a slip-up can prove deadly at worst or result in injury. Put away that phone to experience real life.
