The millionaire husband of murdered Brit-Indian woman Anni Dewani has denied that he is secretly gay, and that he may have dashed Anni's dreams of starting a family due to his sexual preferences.

According to The Sun, British police have already interviewed friends and relatives over the alleged friction between the couple in the weeks before Anni, 28, was shot dead in Cape Town, South Africa.

Last night the family of 30-year-old Shrien Dewani, who has been accused of plotting the killing by hiring hit men, dismissed the gay claims as "just ridiculous".

They insisted he and Anni were planning a family.

A South African detective involved in the case said: "We are looking closely at suggestions that all was not well within the marriage - and that Shrien Dewani's sexuality was a factor. They appear to have had different views about starting a family."

When asked by The Sun whether he was gay, Shrien shook his head vigorously and raised his eyes to the heavens.

He then said: "One of the big talks we had on honeymoon was about starting a family."

Dewani - arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of conspiracy to murder - remained in custody last night as South African authorities prepared an extradition bid.

The millionaire, of Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, will appear at a High Court hearing today.
