The rare gem called the ‘Unique Pink’ is set in a simple ring and was bought yesterday by an Asian private buyer, who bid for it over the telephone and whose identity has not been disclosed.
“The Unique Pink set a new world record for a fancy vivid pink diamond... It’s the highest price ever paid for a fancy vivid pink diamond,” said David Bennett, worldwide chairman of Sotheby’s international jewellery division. Yesterday’s sale eclipsed the previous record of $28.5 million.
