25 January,2026 09:57 AM IST | Kabul (Afghanistan) | ANIFormer Awami League MP Bahauddin Nasim on Saturday raised serious allegations regarding the presence of Pakistan's intelligence agency in Bangladesh and accused the interim administration of allowing foreign influence to expand within the country. Speaking from an undisclosed location to ANI, Nasim claimed that senior officials linked to Pakistan's military intelligence had recently visited Bangladesh. He said, "The ISI's second-in-command had visited Dhaka. The Generals from the Pakistan army had been frequenting Dhaka." Nasim alleged that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has a long-standing reputation internationally for supporting militant groups through shelter, training, and financial assistance, particularly across parts of South and Southeast Asia. According to him, such activities were effectively blocked during the tenure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, when Bangladesh maintained internal security, communal harmony, and a secular democratic character. "This is nothing new. However, during the tenure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, such evil forces had no opportunity to enter Bangladesh, and Bangladesh was a peaceful country. Bangladesh was governed as a secular state, rich in democratic and communal harmony, where there was a genuine sense of amity between Hindus and Muslims. This is the tradition and continuity of the Bengali people," he said. He said that under the current interim administration, which he described as "illegitimate", individuals he identified as collaborators of the former Pakistani occupation forces have gained influence within and outside state institutions. Nowfel further alleged that Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus had independently expanded communication with Pakistani authorities at multiple levels. "Since the monstrous group of terrorists, who designed the overthrow of the government and seized state power, came into power, we have seen that those whom we consider the Pakistani occupation forces and their collaborators are now roaming freely inside and outside the country's power structure. Under their influence, Muhammad Yunus has increased his ties with Pakistan on his own initiative," he said. Citing recent developments, the Awami League leader pointed to direct commercial shipping between Karachi and Chittagong port, claiming that such trade had not occurred in Bangladesh for more than five decades. He argued that these developments signal a shift in foreign relations that coincides with the present interim government's tenure. "He has communicated with various levels of the Pakistani government, and we have seen that ships from Karachi have directly arrived at Chittagong port in Bangladesh for commercial purposes. This kind of direct trade has not happened in Bangladesh in the last 54 years. But this is happening during the tenure of this interim illegal government. Not only that, military and government officials, and various Pakistani intelligence agencies, including the ISI, have been seen roaming around in Bangladesh. They have been seen moving freely in important strategic locations and sensitive areas that the state carefully monitors for security reasons," he said. Nasim also alleged increased movement of Pakistani military officials and intelligence operatives across Bangladesh, including in areas considered strategically sensitive. He claimed that senior ISI officials may have established operational bases inside the country and warned that their presence could contribute to the spread of militant activities through financing, arms supply, and training. "It has also been heard that high-ranking ISI officials have established a base in Bangladesh. And wherever these ISI agents go, they further institutionalise terrorism by providing training and encouraging militants in various ways, supplying them with money, training, weapons, and ammunition, and engaging in spreading terrorism throughout the country and the world," he said. He said public opposition to any foreign intelligence presence is growing, adding that citizens are protesting what they see as a threat to national sovereignty and security. The Awami League, he added, strongly condemns any such activities and calls for immediate action to protect Bangladesh's independence and stability. "The presence of such a clandestine terrorist organisation in Bangladesh has become a daily occurrence. The people of Bangladesh do not want the presence of ISI agents in Bangladesh; they protest against it and strongly condemn it, and we also protest and strongly condemn it," he conclded. 25 January,2026 09:47 AM IST | New Delhi | ANIUnited States federal agents have fatally shot another individual in Minneapolis during an ongoing immigration enforcement drive, triggering widespread protests and renewed demands for President Donald Trump to withdraw heavily armed federal personnel from the city, Al Jazeera reported. On Saturday, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara confirmed that a 37-year-old man succumbed to multiple gunshot injuries after being taken to the hospital. The victim, who was a resident of Minneapolis and a US citizen, according to O'Hara. "Our demand today is for those federal agencies that are operating in our city to do so with the same discipline, humanity and integrity that effective law enforcement in this country demands," he said, quoted by Al Jazeera. The shooting occurred amid a sustained deployment of US immigration enforcement and other federal agents to Minneapolis, where they have been carrying out raids as part of Trump's anti-immigration push. Al Jazeera stated that Minnesota Governor Tim Walz strongly criticised the federal operations, describing them as far removed from immigration enforcement. "This long ago stopped being a matter of immigration enforcement," Minnesota Governor said during a news conference in Saint Paul. "It's a campaign of organised brutality against the people of our state. And today that campaign claimed another life," said Walz. Footage circulating online appears to show several federal officers restraining a man on the ground moments before multiple gunshots are heard. In response, the Department of Homeland Security stated that a US Border Patrol agent shot and killed a person who had a handgun and resisted attempts to be disarmed. Another video, filmed from a different angle, shows the man holding what appears to be a mobile phone before officers deploy pepper spray, tackle him, and shoot him several times. O'Hara later noted that preliminary information suggested the individual was a "a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry", reported by Al Jazeera. The incident follows the fatal shooting of Minneapolis resident Renee Nicole Good earlier this month, who was killed in her vehicle by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer (ICE). Public anger has continued to mount. On Friday, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Minneapolis to condemn ICE operations and the Trump administration's immigration policies. In solidarity, hundreds of businesses across the city shut down as part of a general strike. 25 January,2026 09:39 AM IST | Jakarta | AgenciesNew York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Friday that “everyone” can apply for the free child care programme, expanding benefits to immigrants’ children. This comes amid an intensified crackdown on immigrants by ICE. Mamdani has been a vocal critic of the anti-immigrant rhetoric, has said that his administration is “proud” that New York City is an “immigrant city.” At roundtable to build awareness about the child care program, Mamdani announced that the New York administration won’t check immigration status for universal child care enrollees. Meanwhile, federal agents in a Minneapolis suburb took a five-year-old boy, Liam Conejo Ramos—who was arriving home from preschool—to a detention facility on Tuesday, school officials and the family’s lawyer said. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that “ICE did NOT target a child.” She said ICE was arresting his father, who she said is from Ecuador and in the US illegally. “For the child’s safety, one of our ICE officers remained with the child,” McLaughlin said. 25 January,2026 09:35 AM IST | New York | AgenciesIran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, a force which was key in putting down recent nationwide protests in a crackdown that left thousands dead, is “more ready than ever, finger on the trigger,” its commander said Saturday, as US warships headed toward the Middle East. Nournews, a news outlet close to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, reported on its Telegram channel that the commander, Gen Mohammad Pakpour, warned the United States and Israel “to avoid any miscalculation.” “The Islamic Revolutionary Guards and dear Iran stand more ready than ever, finger on the trigger, to execute the orders and directives of the Commander-in-Chief,” Nournews quoted Pakpour as saying. Tension remains high between Iran and the US in the wake of a bloody crackdown on protests that began on December 28, triggered by the collapse of Iran’s currency, the rial, and swept the country for about two weeks. Trump’s warnings US President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned Tehran, setting two red lines for the use of military force: the killing of peaceful demonstrators and the mass execution of people arrested in the protests. Trump has said Iran halted the execution of 800 people detained in the protests. He has not elaborated on the source of the claim, which Iran’s top prosecutor, Mohammad Movahedi, strongly denied on Friday in comments carried by the judiciary’s Mizan news agency. On Thursday, Trump said aboard Air Force One that the US was moving warships toward Iran “just in case” he wants to take action. “We have a massive fleet heading in that direction, and maybe we won’t have to use it,” Trump said. A US Navy official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss military movements, said on Thursday that the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and other warships travelling with it were in the Indian Ocean. Trump also mentioned the multiple rounds of talks American officials had with Iran over its nuclear programme before Israel launched a 12-day war against the Islamic Republic in June, which also saw US warplanes bomb Iranian nuclear sites. He threatened Iran with military action that would make earlier US strikes against Iranian uranium enrichment sites “look like peanuts.” “They should have made a deal before we hit them,” Trump said. Airline jitters The tension has led at least one European airline to cancel some flights to the wider region, with Air France saying it had decided to temporarily suspend its service to Dubai, UAE. The airline cancelled two return flights from Paris to Dubai over the weekend, saying, without elaborating, that it was due to the current situation in the Middle East. It said it would resume its service to Dubai later on Saturday. Some flights from KLM were also cancelled on Friday and Saturday to Tel Aviv, Israel, according to flight trackers. Rising death toll Although there have been no further demonstrations in Iran for days, the death toll reported by activists has continued to rise as information trickles out despite the most comprehensive internet blackout in Iran’s history, which has now lasted more than two weeks. The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency on Saturday put the death toll at 5137, with the number expected to increase. 5137Death toll according to US NGO This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. All three of them, though, are okay with the arrangement. She now lives with them, and is peacefully content in life with the twins, who are named Sing and Suea. This unconventional romance started when Fah, then studying at a university, took up work as a waitress in a restaurant to support herself financially. Fah chatted to both of them simultaneously, and supposedly developed feelings for both of them. Both brothers work in agriculture, and their poor background does not bother Fah. She helps them with managing their finances. She has also helped them open bank accounts for keeping track of their savings. The twins, allegedly, do not get jealous and are mild-mannered. Fah says that at first, their families were not accepting of their relationship, but they came around later. Their viral TikTok video also had mixed responses, some criticising the set-up and others supporting her courage. 24 January,2026 11:31 PM IST | New York | mid-day online correspondentUS Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Friday (local time) suggested that the 25 per cent tariffs on India could be removed after Indian purchases of Russian oil dropped significantly following the US-imposed levy, calling the outcome a “huge success”, news agency ANI reported. Speaking to Politico amid global discussions on Indian oil imports, US tariffs, and European Union’s (EU’s) trade ambitions, Bessent said Indian refinery purchases of Russian crude had “collapsed” due to tariffs imposed by the United States (US). While the tariffs remain in place, he hinted at a diplomatic “path” to remove them if India adjusts its energy sourcing, asserting that the trade measures offer tangible benefits to the American economy. “We put a 25 per cent tariff on India for buying Russian oil, and the Indian purchases by their refineries of Russian oil have collapsed. So that is a success. The tariffs are still on. I would imagine there is a path to take them off, so that's a check and a huge success,” Bessent told Politico. The remarks come as the US Congress considers a bill proposing a 500 per cent duty on countries importing Russian oil. India, however, has maintained its stance on ensuring “affordable energy” for its population of 1.4 billion under its “India First” energy policy. Reacting to the proposed legislation, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We are aware of the proposed bill. We are closely following the developments,” during a weekly press briefing. Bessent also criticised European countries for buying refined Russian oil from India, saying they were “financing the war against themselves” and calling it an “act of irony and stupidity”, ANI reported. Bessent slams Europe for buying Indian-refined Russian oil “Just to be clear, let's understand what's happening. Before the Ukraine invasion, approximately 2-3 per cent of Indian oil that went into its refineries came from Russia. The oil was sanctioned. It got deeply discounted and moved up into the high teens—7, 18, 19 per cent. Huge pro, huge profits from the refiners. But in the ultimate act of irony and stupidity, guess who was buying the refined products from the Indian refineries made from Russian oil? The Europeans. They are financing the war against themselves. They are financing the Russian,” Bessent said. Meanwhile, EU-India trade talks are underway, with a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) described by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as “the mother of all deals,” covering a market of 2 billion people and 25 per cent of global gross domestic product (GDP). Bessent suggested that the EU avoided similar tariffs on India to protect the upcoming FTA, saying, “I will also point out that our virtue signalling European allies refused to do it because they wanted to sign this big trade deal with India.” The 16th EU-India summit in New Delhi will adopt a new comprehensive strategic agenda, with von der Leyen visiting next weekend to finalise the deal. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, she emphasised Europe’s intention to expand trade and international cooperation: “There is still work to do. But we are on the cusp of a historic trade agreement. Some call it the mother of all deals. One that would create a market of 2 billion people, accounting for almost a quarter of global GDP.” Von der Leyen added that Europe remains open to global business partnerships, highlighting India’s role as an indispensable economic partner despite the Russian oil controversy, ANI reported. 24 January,2026 11:12 PM IST | Davos | mid-day online correspondentUS President Donald Trump on Saturday issued a sharp warning to Canada and Prime Minister Mark Carney against pursuing economic agreements with China, threatening steep trade penalties if Ottawa moves ahead with such deals. Referring to the Canadian Prime Minister as "Governor," Trump said the United States would impose a 100 per cent tariff on Canadian goods should Ottawa deepen trade ties with Beijing. In a post on Truth Social, he wrote, "If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a 'Drop Off Port' for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken." Escalating his criticism, Trump added, "China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life. If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100 percent Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the USA. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" The remarks followed an earlier attack by Trump on Canada, in which he accused Ottawa of opposing his proposed "Golden Dome" missile defence system over Greenland while simultaneously expanding economic engagement with China. "Canada is against The Golden Dome being built over Greenland, even though The Golden Dome would protect Canada," Trump said, adding, "Instead, they voted in favor of doing business with China, who will 'eat them up' within the first year!" Trump's comments came in the wake of Carney's recent visit to Beijing, aimed at reviving economic cooperation with China, Canada's second-largest trading partner after the United States. During the visit, Carney also criticised US and Western policies while addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos. The China trip resulted in an understanding to lower tariffs on certain Canadian agricultural exports and introduce quotas on Chinese electric vehicles entering the Canadian market. The framework could also open the door to increased Chinese investment in Canada. Marking the first visit by a Canadian leader to China in nearly a decade, the talks were described by both sides as reflecting a changing global environment, with Chinese Premier Xi Jinping welcoming what he termed a "turnaround" in bilateral relations. Speaking earlier about the agreement, Carney appeared to allude to ongoing trade frictions with Washington, describing Canada's recent engagement with China as more "predictable" and characterising discussions with Beijing as "realistic and respectful."
