A baby boy, understood to be aged just under one year old, and a five-year-old girl were found by staff at the Miramar Hotel in Lloret de Mar on the Costa Brava near Barcelona.
Police said that the mother, who raised the alarm moments beforehand, had confessed.
Initial reports said that the two children may have been smothered but sources close to the investigation reported that the bodies bore no sign of external injuries. There was no evidence of a struggle.
The woman, who has not been named but is said to be in her 30s, booked into the four-star beachfront hotel on Monday.
Rowdy Brits | |
Recent years have seen a string of incidents in which rowdy British tourists were arrested after incidents in Lloret de Mar's bars. | |
Staff ran to the room and found the two bodies with no signs of life.
Unable to revive
Paramedics rushed to the scene but were unable to revive the two children while local police called in the Catalan regional force the Mossos d'Esquadra to oversee the investigation.
The mother was arrested on site. Police did not give details on her state of mind but said that they were liaising with British officials.
"We are not looking for anyone else at this stage because of what she has told us but we are keeping an open mind," a spokeswoman for the Mossos d'Esquadra said.
The British Embassy in Madrid said an investigation had been launched into the deaths of the two children.
A spokesman said, "We are in contact with the Spanish police but because the children are minors we cannot say much. We believe the mother has been arrested. There is an ongoing investigation."
