Nelson Mandela's 13-year-old great-granddaughter Zenani died in a car crash yesterday on the opening day of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. A grieving Mandela cancelled his appearance at the opening ceremony of the event.

Zenani was killed when she was returning home from a pre-tournament concert in Soweto in a one-car accident on a highway.

According to the police, the driver of the car was arrested and charged with drink driving.

He may also face culpable homicide charges, the police said. FIFA president Sepp Blatter and South Africa President Jacob Zuma sent their condolences to Mandela.
