The Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt reopened on Thursday for a limited number of people, marking the first such movement since recent Iran war tensions escalated following strikes on Israel.

According to Egyptian officials and humanitarian sources, the crossing has reopened in both directions, but only for a restricted group.

Palestinian patients are being allowed to travel into Egypt for medical treatment, while some stranded individuals are being permitted to return to Gaza.

Footage aired by Egyptian media showed a small number of Palestinians preparing to cross, including those who had been receiving treatment. Ambulances were also stationed at the border to transport patients arriving from Gaza.

Strict conditions and monitoring

The reopening comes with strict conditions. Israel had earlier announced that the crossing would resume operations in coordination with Egypt, but only after meeting security requirements.

All travellers are subject to Israeli approval, and additional screening is being conducted inside Gaza in areas controlled by the Israeli army. The European Union has also deployed its border assistance mission to monitor activities at the crossing, ensuring compliance with security protocols.

The history behind the closure

The Rafah crossing has seen repeated closures since the conflict between Israel and Hamas intensified. It was briefly reopened in early February for limited movement but was shut again later that month following new regional developments.

Israel had closed all crossings after launching strikes on Iran, further restricting the movement of people and goods. Although the Israeli-controlled Kerem Shalom crossing later reopened for limited humanitarian aid, Rafah remained largely inaccessible until now.

Lifeline for medical care and families

For many people in Gaza, the Rafah crossing is a vital lifeline. It serves as one of the few routes through which patients can access medical care outside the territory. It is also important for families separated by the conflict, offering a rare chance for reunions.

However, even with the reopening, only a small number of people are being allowed to pass. Reports suggest that the daily limit includes around 50 patients entering Egypt, each accompanied by up to two relatives, with a similar cap on those returning to Gaza.

Challenges continue

Those who previously crossed during earlier openings reported facing extensive security checks and questioning. The limited capacity and strict rules mean that many in need are still unable to travel.

While the reopening offers some relief, it highlights the ongoing humanitarian challenges in Gaza. Access remains tightly controlled, and thousands continue to wait for permission to cross for medical or personal reasons.
