Indrani Mukerjea was rushed to JJ Hospital after she was found lying unconscious inside her cell at Byculla Women's Jail, she finally regained consciousness around 7 pm yesterday. When she opened her eyes, the first words she stuttered to her doctors were, "I'm sorry. I took tablets," a source told mid-day. There is also a probe to find if there was an attempted cover-up of the drug overdose
A special CBI court had framed charges against Indrani Mukerjea, her husband Peter Mukerjea and former husband Sanjeev Khanna in the sensational Sheena Bora murder case in 2012. Driver Shyamvar Rai revealed that Indrani Mukerjea asked him to stop the car in which Sheena was murdered at one point and instructed him to cover her mouth. An email dated October 26, 2009, from Sheena to best friend and former classmate from Guwahati, Sanjana Raktim reads: "I am not in touch with my mother he can't change I have understood that till now. I don't wish to make my life difficult by getting back in touch with her. She has never made any efforts to make things better things between us. In the supplementary chargesheet filed in the Sheena Bora murder case in February 2016, the CBI added a fresh statement from Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deven Bharti. The senior cop revealed that Indrani and Peter Mukerjea had told him to stop looking for Sheena. The 500-page chargesheet names Peter as one of the accused for the 2012 murder of Sheena Bora, apart from prime accused Indrani, her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and her driver Shyam Rai. Renowned psychiatrist, Dr Yusuf Abdulla Matcheswala, who has been treating Sheena's brother, Mikhail Bora, told the CBI that the day Sheena was killed, her mother Indrani had asked him what dosage of a certain anti-psychotic medicine would be fatal. Indrani Mukerjea got tips on carrying out the 'perfect murder' from another case. Indrani had studied the work of another murderer, Vijay Palande, and learnt lessons on what she should and shouldn't do while executing the killing. Indrani also read about how Palande had thrown Kakkad's chopped-up body in Chiplun and the parts were later found by the cops. Mikhail Bora had earlier alleged that Indrani had spiked his drink on the same day when Sheena was killed. "I fear I'll be the next target and, if the police summon me to Mumbai, I want my friends to accompany me as the Mukerjeas are very high-profile and anything can happen to me." It was Indrani's driver who gave her away, all these years after her daughter's disappearance in 2012. The police learnt of Sheena's murder from Indrani's driver, Shyam Rai, who spilled the beans when he was arrested in connection with an illegal arms case. During interrogation, Rai cracked and confessed to several other crimes, including the murder of Sheena. He told the police that he and Indrani, along with another accomplice, murdered Sheena and dumped her body near a farmhouse in Raigad. The very property for which she is alleged to have killed her own daughter, Sheena Bora, in 2012, is now set to be willed to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund and ISKCON. Sources said that main accused Indrani Mukerjea is in the process of drafting her final will, through which she is expected to donate all her property to the two entities. The will is likely to be submitted in court in this week. Last December, Indrani had told the court, "Whether I get convicted or acquitted by this court, I want to give away 75% of the wealth I have earned to the Hare Krishna Conscious Movement (ISKCON) and an NGO working for women and children." Indrani Mukerjea and 200 other inmates were also booked by authorities at Byculla Jail for allegedly rioting after the killing of female prisoner Manjula Govind Shete. Indrani and the inmates gathered on the terrace of Byculla Jail to protest the murder of Manjula Govind Shete, 40, and even damaged property and assaulted prison officials. Prison officials say, climbed the 15-feet high building in the premises and hurled utensils and stones at the administration. They also burnt clothes. However, authorities succeeded in taking control of the situation. In the ruckus, three security personnel including two females were injured. After the clash broke out between inmates and the jail staff, Indrani Mukerjea spoke to the inmates and asked them to calm down. She also suggested they raise their complaints through advocates.
As Indrani Mukerjea took the stand in the Sheena Bora murder trial on 28th June, she also told the court about the custodial death of fellow inmate Manjula Shetye and an alleged assault on her by the jail superintendent during the recent riot in the Byculla women's prison. The court, after hearing her out, asked that she be taken to JJ Hospital for a medical check-up and later to Nagpada police station to record her statement. Indrani told the court that Byculla Jail officials threatened she would meet the same fate as Manjula if she testified against them. Sheena Bora murder case accused-turned-approver Shyamvar Rai on Tuesday said he fears for his life. Main accused Indrani Mukerjea's former driver spoke about his apprehensions regarding his safety and security on Tuesday with the investigating officer of the case, after prosecution concluded his examination in a special CBI court. After deposing in court and identifying the accused Indrani Mukherjea, her current and ex-husband, Shyamvar Rai said that he feared for his life. He also identified the suitcase in which Indrani Mukerjea and her alleged co-conspirators were planning to dispose of Indrani’s second born, Mikhail.
In a startling twist to the Sheena Bora murder case, her mother and key accused Indrani Mukerjea told a CBI court that her husband Peter Mukerjea might have caused her daughter's disappearance out of 'greed and ill-will'.
