    The American singer, who is best known for her chart-topping singles like, 'I Kissed A Girl', 'Teenage Dream' and others has over 84.03 million followers. After surpassing fellow singer Justin Bieber as the most followed person on Twitter in November 2013, she became the first person to gain 50 million followers in January 2014 and won the 2015 Guinness World Record for most Twitter followers and is still going strong in 2016.   • Justin Bieber
    Teenage heartthrob Bieber who commands an impressive Twitter following of over 76.78 million had surpassed Lady Gaga for having the most followed person on Twitter in January 2013 before being dethroned of that honour by Katy Perry. He was frequently a trending topic on Twitter when the feature first launched because of frequent fan discussions on the network. Justin Bieber was named Twitter's top trending star in 2010. Social media analytics gave Bieber's account a score of 100. 16.7 million of the singer's 37 million Twitter followers were found not genuine in an analysis conducted by the firm Socialbakers in April 2013.   • Barack Obama
    The current US President has over 60,760,489 netizens following the @BarackObama Twitter handle operated by Obama's former campaign operation. He became the latest big name to join microblogging site in May this year with a personal account. Starting with the tweet, "Dad, husband, and 44th President of the United States", Obama went on to post, "Hello, Twitter! It's Barack. Really!" and then followed that greeting up with "Six years in, they're finally giving me my own account." He gained more than a million followers in no time.     The 'Blank Space' singer, who currently has over 72.38 million followers joined Twitter in December 2008. The social network's Twitter Music account (@TwitterMusic) paid tribute to Swift's first message sent on the network, which gave a shoutout to her cat and has since received 9,412 retweets. The tweet read, "apologizing to a very needy cat for being gone so long." Taylor Swift and her communications team engage directly with fans through Twitter.     The popular video-sharing website YouTube has so far amassed upto 60.33 million followers since joining Twitter in November 2007. According to the account, they tweet on, 'music, trends and all that is awesome in the world of YouTube'. Popular videos on the website are shared on the Twitter channel using a URL shortener.
  • Lady Gaga
    The 'Poker Face' singer, who joined Twitter in December 2008 was the first celebrity to top 10 million followers in 2011. She broke her own record in January 2012 by amassing over 18 million followers. Gaga is currently followed by 56.86 million tweeple. In the wake of the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami she shared an image of a prayer bracelet she designed on her Twitter page with proceeds going to disaster relief efforts. Pic/Santa Banta

    The Barbadian singer, whose Twitter account contains about 56.43 million followers was named the hottest woman on Twitter in a 2012 poll. Rihanna's racy tweets and provocative snapshots helped her land the title. She made headlines in September 2012 for flaunting her new tattoo in a topless photo that she shared on the social networking site. The 'Umbrella' hitmaker courted controversy for her abuse-laden rant against a fan's drug-overdose slur. The BBC had come under fire for apparently making a tweet that seemed to support the domestic violence incident involving the singer and her now ex-boyfriend Chris Brown. Rihanna and Brown even feuded on Twitter after their much-publicised split. She recently tweeted a picture of herself with her cousin Noella Alstrom's newborn baby daughter. Pic/Santa Banta

    The former N'SYNC boyband member-turned actor has over 52.33 million followers. He made headlines due his relationship and subsequent break-up with fellow singer Britney Spears in the early 2000s. Now, a successful Hollywood actor in addition to being a singer Timberlake also enjoys the privilege of having one of the most popular Twitter accounts with the most followers in the world since joining the website on March 2009.   • Ellen DeGeneres
    The popular comedienne and talk show host with 55.27 million followers made news last year of her iconic Oscar selfie, which featured an all-star lineup including Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Jared Leto, Meryl, Ellen, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum and Lupita Nyung'o and her brother. The image, taken live on television and posted online by Ellen via her Twitter account @TheEllenShow, has clocked 2.4 million retweets and has been 'favourited' more than 1.1 million times and is still rising. The incident crashed Twitter for almost 20 minutes. It went on to raise USD 3 million for charity and was also parodied on popular animated TV comedy 'The Simpsons'. Pic/AFP

    The 'Baby One More Time' hitmaker who currently has over 44 million followers was the first-ever member to reach a million supporters since joining Twitter in 2008. Spears was voted the most popular celebrity on Twitter behind Ashton Kutcher in May 2010. She would set another record of sorts by becoming the first person to have over 5 million followers a week later the same year. Britney Spears later became the sixth in Twitter history to gain 10 million followers in 2011. She has been named one of the most influential female musicians on the social networking website.
