Pity Chandu is 60-plus, Gauti my favourite: Patil

Former India coach Sandeep Patil reckons India have missed out on a smart coach with a proven record in Chandrakant Pandit, 62, who guided Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third Indian Premier League crown on Sunday. “I read about the possibility of Stephen Fleming, Ricky Ponting [although both are reportedly not keen], VVS Laxman and Gautam Gambhir becoming head coach. Had it not been for the age limit of 60, Chandu would have been spoken of as contender,” Patil told mid-day from Monte Carlo, where he is holidaying. Also Read: SRH assistant coach rues batting collapse Sandeep Patil “Look at Chandu’s record with Mumbai, Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, India U-19 and now Kolkata Knight Riders,” said Patil who coached India in 1996. While Gambhir appears to be the front runner to take over from Rahul Dravid after the T20 World Cup, there was talk of a foreigner coming in. Bobby Simpson, Geoff Marsh, John Wright, Greg Chappell, Gary Kirsten and Duncan Fletcher are the overseas personalities who have been either consultants or coaches for India since 1999. “With due respect to foreign coaches who have worked with BCCI and the Indian team in the past, Ravi [Shastri] did a great job and Rahul [Dravid] has done a good job. Why not have one [a coach] who has been consistent for the last few years? Whatever his [Pandit’s] style of coaching is, at the end of the day, results are what matter and Chandu has given results in no small measure,” said Patil. “Gautam appears to be a sound choice. I have seen him grow from his India ‘A’ days till the end of his international career and now as mentor to a victorious KKR unit. He deserves a chance,” Patil, who also coached India ‘A’, remarked. Former India batsman Patil, 67, coached Kenya in the 2003 World Cup when the East Africans reached the semi-finals in Southern Africa. Incidentally, Pandit started leading MP two seasons after Patil decided to put a full stop to his MP and first-class cricket career in 1992-93.

SRH assistant coach rues batting collapse

It was all down to a few good deliveries, said Sunrisers Hyderabad assistant coach Simon Helmot as he tried to explain his team’s poor batting performance in the final against Kolkata Knight Riders, conceding that the plan to be aggressive fell flat quite early in the match. Also Read: West Indies wins the T20I series against South Africa by 3-0 SRH were hammered by eight wickets after putting just 113 runs on the board. KKR overhauled the target in just over 10 overs to claim their third IPL trophy on Sunday night. “We were not going to change our brand or approach. We wanted to be aggressive, but also smart and work the situations through,” Helmot said in the post-match press conference. “Our plan certainly wasn’t to get bowled out for 113 in the 18th over. We played in a really positive way, but a few good deliveries [from KKR bowlers] early on put us on the back foot. Unfortunately, it was one of those days,” he added. Batting first, the SRH top-order failed to get going, with the three batters getting dismissed for single figures. Big-hitting opener Travis Head fell for his third duck in four matches, dismissed by left-arm pacer Vaibhav Arora. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. West Indies wins the T20I series against South Africa by 3-0

The West Indies completed a 3-0 sweep of their T20I series with South Africa after an eight wicket crushing of the Proteas at Sabina Park on Sunday. Set 164 to win, the Caribbean side raced to the target with 6.1 overs to spare and for the loss of just two wickets. Openers Brandon King and Johnson Charles put on 92 in 6.4 overs with Charles in particular punishing the tourists as he battered 69 off just 26 balls. Charles hit 14 of those 26 balls for boundaries including five sixes.  Also Read: ‘Some contributions go unnoticed’ Kyle Mayers came in and kept up the momentum and when stand-in skipper King departed for 44 (28 balls), West Indies were 130-2 with 9.1 overs remaining. Mayers ended on 36 not out as the West Indies ensured they head into the T20 World Cup, which they will co-host with the United States, in confident mood. “Happy with my own performance. I would’ve liked to carry my bat through the end though. It was an important 3-0 win, last series before the World Cup, so important preparation and good momentum going into the World Cup,” King said. ‘Some contributions go unnoticed’

Drenched in emotion, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) players highlighted the contributions of mentor Gautam Gambhir and assistant coach Abhishek Nayar in moulding the team into a champion outfit that outclassed Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to lift its third IPL trophy here on Sunday. KKR crushed Hyderabad by eight wickets in a completely one-sided final after bowling out their opponents for 113, the lowest ever total in an IPL title clash. This was KKR’s third IPL title. Also Read: T20 World Cup 2024: West Indies suffer huge blow, Holder ruled out due to injury Abhishek Nayar and Gautam Gambhir Varun Chakravarathy, who has had a successful season with his spin bowling, lauded Nayar’s contributions. “All I can think right now is of the person who built this Indian core: Abhishek Nayar. ‘Please come here’,” he said, asking the former Mumbai batter to join them. Jubilant Venkatesh Venkatesh Iyer, who remained not out on 52 off 26 balls in an easy chase of 114, also mentioned Nayar’s role in the team’s success. “Really happy with it. As Varun mentioned, Abhishek Nayar deserves all the credit in the world. Some contributions go unnoticed, I want to make sure they don’t. This guy deserves all the credit in the world for the way he has been working for this franchise.” Having lost the toss, KKR produced a clinical effort with the ball to dismiss SRH for 113, the lowest ever total in an IPL title clash. Gauti’s message KKR chased down the target of 114 with as many as 57 balls to spare, even as team mentor Gambhir and head coach Chandrakant Pandit watched the action unfolding in the middle from the dugout. “I want to share one short story that when GG [Gambhir] bhaiya was named the mentor. I sent him a long message as I was really happy. But he replied saying, ‘Thank you but I would be happy if we stand at the podium with the trophy in our hands’. Today is that day and I will never forget that message,” said Nitish Rana. Middle-order batter Rinku Singh said, “I am proud of my whole team and GG sir. It was God’s plan.” This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. T20 World Cup 2024: A few Australians to miss out on warm-up matches

Australia is facing shortage of players and might be forced to use support staff as substitute fielders in the warm-up games of next month’s T20 World Cup due to the low turnaround time between the IPL and the global showpiece. Australia are set to play two warm-up games against Namibia on Wednesday and the West Indies on Friday in Trinidad but they might have as few as eight players available for the two matches since most of them will take a break following their stint in the IPL Playoffs. Also Read: Deadline for head coach application ends, but BCCI and Gautam Gambhir stays silent “We’re going to be undermanned. But it is a practice game. The guys who need to play will play as much as they can and we’ll figure it out from there,” captain Mitchell Marsh, who himself is not certain to play against Namibia as he is recovering from a hamstring injury, told cricket.com.au. The IPL finals between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad concluded on Sunday night and three players—Travis Head, Pat Cummins and player of the match Mitchell Starc—were part of the two teams. Besides the trio, Cameron Green and Glenn Maxwell, who were part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, will only link up with the World Cup squad by the end of the week in Barbados, while Marcus Stoinis, who played for Lucknow Super Giants, is expected to arrive in Trinidad only after the Namibia practice match. Travelling reserves Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matt Short too are set to join after Australia’s first match of the tournament proper which is against Oman on June 5. “It’s important to be flexible. Guys who have been at the IPL have been playing a lot of cricket. We prioritised giving them a couple of days at home to see their families, refresh, and play the long game for this tournament,” Marsh said. Deadline for head coach application ends, but BCCI and Gambhir stays silent

The deadline for applying for the post of Team India's head coach has ended on Monday. Following that, the Board of Control for Cricket in India and its top name, Gautam Gambhir chose to be silent. After the Kolkata Knight Riders' IPL 2024 triumph, the name of Gautam Gambhir is getting more attention. With both parties not commenting anything on the matter, it seems that the Indian board doesn't have too many options available for the position. Currently, most of the Indian team players have travelled to New York for the T20 World Cup 2024 under the guidance of head coach Rahul Dravid. Also Read: IPL 2024: Mitchell Starc praises uncapped Indian pacer Harshit Rana The only thing confirmed is that no foreign player has applied for the position after the board's secretary Jay Shah clarified that the Board is looking at someone who has risen through the ranks and knows the domestic structure. It could be safe to say that the board's primary target was VVS Laxman who is currently the head of National Cricket Academy. But the veteran seems to be least interested in a full-time position which demands him to be available for 10 months a year. "The deadline is fine, but the BCCI brass wouldn't mind taking some more time before reaching a decision. Right now, the team will be busy with World T20 for the better part of the month of June. After that seniors will be rested from tours of Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe where any of the NCA-based senior coaches can accompany the team. So what's the hurry," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity. Also, KKR principal owner Shah Rukh Khan shares a deep bond with Gautam Gambhir and it is not easy to leave an IPL team which has been a part of the identity of the former India opener. There's another aspect that needs to be looked into seriously what senior India players, currently in New York, feel about whether Gambhir can indeed be Rahul Dravid's replacement. (With PTI Inputs)

IPL 2024: Mitchell Starc praises uncapped Indian pacer Harshit Rana

Following Kolkata Knight Riders' win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the finals of the IPL 2024, lead pacer Mitchell Starc praised Indian speedster Harshit Rana for his outstanding performance in the recently concluded Indian league. Indian pacer Harshit was the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the IPL 2024. Featuring 13 matches, he bagged 19 wickets with an economy of 9.08. Despite having an upset start in the IPL 2024, Starc proved his worth for Kolkata later in the league. In the playoffs, when the team needed him the most, Starc delivered by registering three wickets in the qualifier one against SRH. Starc said Harshit had some good matches in this season and bowled in tough situations. Also Read: T20 World Cup 2024: Cummins, Starc, Head set to miss the warm-up matches for Australia "We had a hugely talented bowling group this season with youngsters like Harshit Rana, Vaibhav Arora, and Chetan Sakariya. Harshit had some good matches this season and has bowled in tough situations. He's only gonna improve from a season he had," Starc said in the post-match press conference. The Australian cricketer further stated that throughout this IPL 2024, the right-arm pacer has learned what his skills are capable of. "Harshit is learning what his skills are capable of throughout this IPL. He seems pretty confident in his abilities. He started his season with the second-best team in this season (SRH). The right-arm seamer has bowled some tough overs and also crucial last overs and has taken a good amount of wickets this season as well," the left-arm pacer asserted In the end, Starc concluded by speaking on the Chennai pitch. He said there was a bit of swing at the start for both sides. "The Chennai pitch was quite different as compared to other grounds in IPL 2024. There was a bit of swing for both sides at the start. There was less turn as compared to the game between SRH-RR in the Qualifier 2. We bowled fantastically well to keep the SRH side below 120," the 34-year-old player concluded. (With ANI Inputs)

IPL 2024 | "...it's special": Andre Russell on KKR winning the title

With the Kolkata Knight Riders lifting the IPL 2024 trophy, star all-rounder Andre Russell said he feels excited over his contributions to the team's journey in the IPL and it's a special feeling.  Kolkata defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024 finals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium and registered the title to their name for the third time. Mitchell Starc, Andre Russell's exceptional spells and Venkatesh Iyer's gritty fifty helped KKR successfully chase the target in the IPL 2024 finals against SRH. Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head who showcased their explosive batting approach in most of the SRH's IPL 2024, got a taste of their own medicine in the finals. In a battle of two big buys, the Australian stars Cummins (Rs 20.5 crore for SRH) and Starc (Rs 24.75 crore for KKR), it was the latter who prevailed. Also Read: IN PHOTOS | T20 World Cup 2024: Virat Kohli's match-winning knocks in WC "When you're a part of this squad, not playing or not involved in the field, but supporting the guys all the way, it's always a good feeling, but this is a special feeling. In the XI, playing a part in the final, contributing as well through my leadership and everything, it's an exciting feeling. It's special," Russell said on Jio Cinema. The 36-year-old cricketer further spoke about his batting technique. "It's just me not clearing my front leg too much, standing as still as possible, and waiting as long as possible. Normally, this is my trigger movement, clearing my left leg, so I tried to keep it as still as possible. So, if the bowler bowls wide, I push straight and I have access because I am standing on the off-stump," the West Indies all-rounder added. Earlier, SRH won the toss and elected to bat in the IPL 2024 finals. KKR rocked SRH with continuous wickets, with the big buy Mitchell Starc justifying his Rs 24.75 crore price tag. Only skipper Pat Cummins (24 in 19 balls, with two fours and a six) and Aiden Markram (20 in 23 balls, with three fours) touched the 20-run mark and SRH was bundled out for 113 in 18.3 overs. Andre Russell (3/19) was the top bowler for KKR. Starc (2/14) and Harshit Rana (2/24) also contributed well with the ball. Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy and Vaibhav Arora took a wicket each. KKR pulled off the run-chase of 114 runs in just 10.3 overs with eight wickets in hand, with Venkatesh Iyer (52* in 26 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (39 in 32 balls, with five fours and two sixes) shining for KKR.
