Duleep Trophy: Washington Sundar fifer, Vishal Gohil lead India Red to title

It was a memorable match for the young spin duo of Washington Sundar and Vishal Gohil as they helped India Red clinch the Duleep Trophy with a superb bowling performance. The two claimed 19 of the 20 wickets India Blue lost during their 163-run defeat. There is no doubt that the pitch was conducive for spinners, but Washington and Gohil bowled with maturity belying their age and made the most of the conditions. None of the India Blue batsmen, barring skipper Suresh Raina (45) and Manoj Tiwary (38), looked comfortable. But once Raina and Tiwary departed in successive overs to Washington, it was only a matter of time before India Red wrapped up the match with over a day to spare.

Washington received support from Mumbai left-arm spinner Gohil (three for 102), who kept up the pressure at the other end while the TN off-spinner ran through the top order when India Blue were required to chase down 393 for an unlikely win. Washington's performance was indeed outstanding as besides scoring 88 and 42, the lanky TN player was devastating with the ball. He made full use of the turning track at the Ekana Stadium here as he followed up his first innings five-wicket haul with a career best six for 87, to produce the best-ever match figures of 11 for 181 on Duleep Trophy debut.
