IPL 2026: 'Punjab Kings are one of the teams to beat' says Aakash Chopra

Punjab Kings (PBKS) are "one of the teams to beat" in the current Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, according to former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra. Chopra highlighted PBKS' potent batting unit, which is based on young Indian players, and stated that coach Ricky Ponting and captain Shreyas Iyer are doing a good job of leading the club.PBKS finished second in their previous season after losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the reigning champions this year. PBKS began the 2026 IPL season with two victories in their first two games before sharing a point with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after weather caused their match to conclude in a draw.Speaking on JioHotstar, JioStar expert Aakash Chopra said the Punjab Kings are a strong contender this season with their impressive form and the batting approach built around young Indian players. "Punjab Kings are definitely one of the teams to beat. They were outstanding last season, reached the final, and have started this season strongly as well. What makes them different is their batting. They rely heavily on young Indian players with limited international experience, supported by overseas players, and yet it all comes together really well," Aakash Chopra said.Young players Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya excelled for PBKS with the bat during the IPL 2025 season, amassing 549 and 475 runs, respectively. With 604 runs during the season, captain Shreyas Iyer topped the batting charts. Chopra praises the Iyer-Ponting duo for PBKS Aakash Chopra further noted that while Punjab Kings' bowling isn't exceptional, it gets the job done, and praised the leadership of Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting. He added that the team was unlucky with the abandoned match, as they likely would have backed themselves to win based on their current form."Their bowling isn't extraordinary, but it's effective, and the team is being managed brilliantly by Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting. Having said that, they'll feel a bit hard done by with this abandoned game because on current form, they would have backed themselves to win it more often than not," he said. (With ANI Input)

IPL 2026 | 'When I got the opportunity with RCB again, I decided...': Padikkal

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have so far managed to secure two wins in as many matches of the ongoing IPL 2026. In the first match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), RCB's Impact Player, Devdutt Padikkal, played a knock of 61 runs in 26 balls, including seven boundaries and four maximums. Later in the match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the left-handed batsman smashed 50 runs off 29 deliveries, laced with five boundaries and two maximums. Speaking about his knocks, he stated that a player needs those failures to remind him how much harder he needs to work. "When things didn't go well, I didn't have answers. But that phase gave me that motivation and that fire to get better. Sometimes you need those failures along your journey to remind you how much harder you need to work," he said. Further speaking, the cricketer said that he decided to change certain things when he got the opportunity to represent RCB yet again. "When I got the opportunity with RCB again, I decided there were a lot of things I needed to change; I needed to really commit to working on those things regardless of what the outcome may be. It's not easy when you've grown up playing a certain way. I could have easily accepted that I'll stick to test cricket, but it was important for me to come out of that comfort zone and try to adapt," said the 25-year-old cricketer. The Kerala-born cricketer then said he has reached the stage of maturity where he understands what things he needs to do to bring his 'A-game'. "In 2020-2021, I was a lot more scared as a young kid coming in. I feel over the years I've learned to handle everything that goes around in the IPL. At this point, I've reached a stage of maturity where I understand what I need to do to be at my best. And I feel a lot calmer and more composed, and I'm really happy at where I am, and I'm really enjoying my cricket," said Paddikal. RCB will now lock horns with Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 10 at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Guwahati. (With ANI Inputs)

IPL 2026: Heinrich Klaasen backs SRH's approach with willow after two losses

The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will lock horns with Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL 2026 match on April 11 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. So far, SRH has played three matches and suffered losses in two games. Speaking about the team's batting performance, star batsman Heinrich Klaasen feels that Hyderabad's performance has been good with the bat. "Our batting has been good so far, but we missed out about 40 runs in 3 games. We need to bat better. The two games that we struggled, we didn't execute with the bat. The bowlers, especially the pacers have been fantastic. We need to get to 220-230 mark to give our bowlers chance of defending," he said. Further speaking, he admitted that the team's fielding needs to be improved. He then stated that if SRH want to yield better results, then the team need to put all three compartments (batting, bowling, fielding) together. "Our fielding has been poor and that's what is affecting us. I will give us 6 out of 10 so far, we played some brilliant cricket in phases but lost out in the crucial phases of the game. Bowlers are hanging on as per plan, rest of the batting is doing well. I will give 80 per cent but our fielding needs to improve, we need to hold onto our catches. If you need to go 8-9 in rating, you need to build some momentum, you need to put all three compartments together," said Klaasen. IPL 2026: Heinrich Klaasen speaks about his performances In three matches, Klaasen has been consistently delivering crucial knocks. In the first match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), he scored 31 runs, including two boundaries and a maximum. Later in the second match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the right-handed batsman smashed 52 runs, laced with four boundaries and a maximum. In the clash against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), the 34-year-old cricketer accumulated 62 runs, with the help of five boundaries and two maximums. Reflecting on his knocks, the South African said that it was a good start for him and would like to continue the form. "Unfortunately we lost two games but on a personal note, it was a good start for me especially since I am not playing too much cricket these days. I would like to continue the form," he said. Jofra Archer (Pic: AFP)

IPL 2026: Will Archer's aim pierce through Hitman's defence?

The IPL 2026 match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) will be played on Tuesday at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Guwahati. The "Paltan" will be eager to secure the second victory in the ongoing edition of the cash-rich league. However, the only hurdle standing in their way will be Jofra Archer. So far in the tournament, the Royals have played two matches and secured victories in as many games. In their first match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Archer returned with the figures of two wickets for 19 runs in four overs. In the second match against Gujarat Titans, however, he could not claim any wickets. In fact, he leaked 38 runs in his spell of four overs. However, the "Paltan" could likely be an easy target for the fierce pacer. After the first match, MI's batting line-up seemed a bit confused in the second game. The only consistent performer for the Mumbai-based franchise was veteran batsman Rohit Sharma. After delivering the knocks of 78 and 38 runs in two matches, it will be interesting to see if the right-handed batsman tastes success against the Royals. As Rohit has been impressing fans and cricket pundits with the new fit version of himself, the 38-year-old cricketer is also delivering crucial knocks with the willow. Despite the Hitman’s exceptional form, RR’s Archer will be eager to draw first blood in Guwahati. The Royals, under the leadership of Riyan Parag, are showcasing a fearless and aggressive style of play. RR's match result will heavily rely on their star pacer, Jofra Archer, as he will be expectated to bring his 'A-game' in front of the home crowd. Whether Archer can aim his deliveries right to help the Royals secure two points will be a key point to watch. Wanindu Hasaranga, Matheesha Pathirana yet to take SLC-mandated fitness tests

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has confirmed that Wanindu Hasaranga and Matheesha Pathirana are among 15 centrally contracted players who have yet to take the mandatory fitness tests, while six others have failed at least one attempt, according to ESPNcrcinfo. This means that out of the 45 centrally contracted Sri Lanka players, only 24 have currently passed the test. The reasons for players yet to undergo the fitness tests range from injuries to logistical challenges. However, Hasaranga and Pathirana's status remain key in the context of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 as they are scheduled to play for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), respectively. Hasaranga, dealing with a left hamstring injury, faces uncertainty over his fitness test, as he has not requested a No Objection Certificate (NOC). Pathirana, on the other hand, who suffered a calf strain during the T20 World Cup 2026, has started bowling in the nets. According to the report, he could join the IPL in India by mid-April. Although no official date has been set for his SLC-mandated fitness test, it is expected to take place within the coming week. Ahead of the IPL 2026, SLC had announced that players who have requested to participate in the IPL will be issued an NOC only upon successfully passing SLC's mandatory Physical Performance Test. "Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) wishes to announce that players who have requested to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 will be issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) only upon successfully passing SLC's mandatory Physical Performance Test," a statement from Sri Lanka Cricket read. "At present, SLC is conducting an eight-week specialised physical training program for all nationally contracted players. This initiative aims to enhance players' physical performance standards in preparation for upcoming international assignments. Along with this program, players are also undergoing the mandatory physical performance tests, a routine process followed to check the fitness standards of the players," the SCL said further. Players who meet the required standards will be cleared for domestic tournaments and issued a No Objection Certificate for the IPL, SLC had announced. "Only those who successfully meet the required standards of the physical performance tests will be cleared to participate in the ongoing domestic tournament and also granted an NOC to take part in IPL 2026," the SLC statement said further. IPL 2026: Skipper Hardik Pandya resumes training, eyes return for 'Paltan' again

The Mumbai Indians (MI) are all set to clash against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL 2026 match on Tuesday at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Guwahati. Ahead of the match, MI's regular skipper Hardik Pandya has returned to the training session, which have boosted the hopes of his availability. Earlier, he missed the previous match due to illness. In his absence, Suryakumar Yadav led MI in the match against Delhi Capitals (DC), which they lost by six wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The visitors had made a couple of changes in that match, bringing in Deepak Chahar and Corbin Bosch, while Trent Boult was left out to maintain the overseas player balance. However, Hardik appeared to be in good rhythm during the training session on Sunday night. He was seen hitting yorkers, bowling drills, and hitting the lines with serious pace. Watch your toes! 🫣 pic.twitter.com/7bq1Y2c7oQ — Mumbai Indians (@mipaltan) April 6, 2026 During the session, he mentioned to team physiotherapist Nitin Patel that he had been working extensively on his yorkers since the T20 World Cup earlier this year, believing that mastering them makes other deliveries easier to execute. With the bat, the Gujarat-born cricketer was timing the ball well under the watchful eyes of batting coach Kieron Pollard. It will be interesting to see if the star all-rounder manages to deliver a big show tonight against the Royals. IPL 2026: Mumbai Indians' bowling coach Paras Mhambrey heaps praise on Bumrah

The Mumbai Indians (MI) are all set to lock horns with Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL 2026 match on Tuesday at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Guwahati. Ahead of the clash, MI's bowling coach Paras Mhambrey heaped praise on lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah by saying that every individual should pick up the pacer's work ethic. "One value that every individual and bowler should pick up from Boom (Bumrah) is clearly his work ethic. The way he goes about it in the nets, tick marking everything that he has worked on and will be using during the game. But, in the last few years with the Indian team...he has grown into a phenomenal bowler and even more so as an individual, which has been amazing," he said. So far in the tournament, the "Paltan" has played two matches and secured only one victory in their opening encounter against KKR, while losing to DC in the second, so they will be looking to make a comeback in their third match against RR. On the other hand, Rajasthan Royals (RR) under the leadership of newly appointed captain Riyan Parag have managed to secure two wins in as many matches. With two wins, the Royals are placed in second spot on the points table, whereas the "Paltan" has slipped to the sixth position. Ahead of the match, the match-up between RR's swashbuckling opening batsman Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and MI's lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah will be one to watch out for in Guwahati. Also, Mumbai's skipper Hardik Pandya is falling short of 66 runs to complete 2,000 runs for the franchise. IPL 2026: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Punjab Kings match abandoned due to rain

The highly anticipated clash between the Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings has been abandoned due to rain. The two teams were facing off at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. After winning the toss, Ajinkya Rahane elected to bat first despite the cloud cover. His KKR team got off to a poor start, losing Finn Allen and Cameron Green in the early stage of the innings.Xavier Bartlett was the star of the show for PBKS, taking both wickets in his opening spell of 2/9. Bartlett swung the ball and got the outside edge of both batters, and the keeper completed a comfortable catch. When rain halted the match, KKR were at 25 runs for the loss of 2 wickets after 3.4 overs. Rahane's decision to choose to bat first with the possibility of rain was surprising.Speaking at the toss, the KKR skipper Rahane said that the wicket looked good to score runs and put the opposition under pressure. However, the KKR top order struggled against the pace and swing early on in the innings. 'We are going to bat first. Looks like a good wicket, a little bit of the drier side, but it's a very good wicket and slightly less covering of grass as well. It's all about having that belief and confidence. It's about winning those small moments." Ajinkya Rahane said after winning the toss.PBKS skipper was happy to bowl first, largely due to the cloud cover, and admitted that he was confident of chasing on this ground."I was supposed to bowl as well. So kind of happy with the decision he took." Shreyas Iyer said. KKR get their first point of the season No result in the game meant that KKR opened their account in the points table. After losing their first 2 matches, Ajinkya Rahane's team got the first point of the season. Meanwhile, PBKS remain unbeaten in the IPL this season, having won their opening two matches. The Punjab-based franchise moved to the top of the table at 5 points from 3 matches. PBKS will face the Sunrisers Hyderabad next, while KKR will go against the Lucknow Super Giants.
