Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho believes he will succeed Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and wants to take over at the end of next season.

Mourinho, 48, is set on 'coming home' to the Premier League and has told close friends he believes the way will be open for him in the summer of 2012.

The problem would come if Ferguson decides to go out on a high this year with a second Treble triumph, The Sun reports.

Mourinho has three years left on his Real deal but could walk away; such is his desire to return to work in the Premier League.

United chiefs are keen on Mourinho, who won the Champions League with both Porto and Inter Milan and guided Chelsea to two Premier League titles.

The Portuguese coach has led Real into their first Champions League semi-final since 2003, where they will meet bitter rivals Barcelona.

Asked if he might replace Roberto Mancini at Manchester City, Mourinho replied: "I say it is impossible."
